Samsung Galaxy S20+: Zoom into a bigger galaxy

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ comes with 30X hybrid zoom and a new design philosophy. VISHNU ANAND checks out its key features
March 30 2020: Every year, Samsung launches a phone each in two of its premium lines -- the S series and the Note series. These devices are usually sought after and bookings often open even before the formal launch. The last number from Samsung was the Note 10+, which became popular with its snazzy Aura Glow colour variant which recreated a rainbow effect on the back cover. Interestingly, the brand has chosen to go a little sublime after that, is the recently launched S20+ is any indication.
Hybrid zoom
The USP of the S20+ is its hybrid 30X camera zoom, a combination of optical and digital zoom, which complements the 64 MP camera sensor. The quad-camera setup at the back also includes 12 MP secondary sensors for depth, low-light and landscape shots.
The 10 MP selfie camera is much optimized compared to previous devices in this series from Samsung. Those who have followed the S series closely will be pleasantly surprised with a new camera mode -- the single take -- that lets you pan and take a variety of shots and footage in one go. using AI algorithms, Samsung is able to optimize these shots in real time. This time around, there is a dedicated 'AR zone', that houses an AR emoji camera, a doodle app, a 3D scanner. and many quirky features like real-time doodle make-up, and home decor. With the S20+, Samsung is clearly signaling to the world that AR has finally arrived to optimize smartphone photography.
The device is powered by the Exynos 990 processor, and a 4000 mAh battery with 25W fast charging. The processor doesn't overheat even after intensive gaming, and true to a Samsung flagship, it has a smooth and adaptive interface, with the 120 Hz refresh rate making it an addictive experience. Designwise, the S20+ has a rectangular camera module housing at the back, which is neat and classy -- an indication that not-so-premium brands will probably adopt this design for the next few months. The shiny steel-coloured rims seamlessly blend into the glass metal frame, which is sturdy yet stylish.
With end-to-end curved display and top-of-the-line specs, the Samsung S20+ is the premium flagship to buy, this summer. With prices starting around Rs. 73,000, this device will stay with you for a long time, if you choose to invest in it.
