TCS joins multiple partners to offer Voice over LTE solution

Mumbai, February 16, 2016: Tata Consultancy Services  has unveiled a  solution to enable Voice over LTE for virtualized networks using TCS’ Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Concertoplatform.
TCS is collaborating with Brocade, Metaswitch and Ixia, on Intel Xeon platforms to demonstrate the deployment and verification of Voice over LTE service in virtualized networks

In a world where smart-devices are growing rapidly and demand for mobile data is exploding, Virtualized mobile Networks help us maintain high end-user experience by improving service agility and scalability.

TCS’ NFV Concerto platform integrates Brocade’s virtualized Evolved Packet Core, Metaswitch’s virtualized Internet Multimedia System and Session Border Controller, and Ixia’s IxLoad  Wireless, to successfully demonstrate voice over LTE service on a virtualized mobile network. This solution is deployed on Intel Xeon processor-based servers leveraging Red Hat’s OpenStack.

The Voice over LTE, VoLTE scheme was devised as a result of
operators seeking a standardised system for transferring traffic
for voice over LTE.  Originally LTE was seen as a completely
IP cellular system just for carrying data, and operators would
be able to carry voice either by reverting to 2G / 3G systems
or by using VoIP in one form or another.
 However it was seen
that this would lead to fragmentation and incompatibility not
allowing all phones to communicate with each other and this
|would reduce voice traffic. Additionally SMS services are
|still widely used, often proving a means of set-up for other
applications.

Even though revenue from voice calls and SMS is falling, a format for voice over LTE and messaging, it was as necessary to have a viable and standardized scheme to provide the voice and SMS services to protect this revenue.

Says V Rajanna, Vice President and Global Head of Technology Business Unit, TCS: “TCS’ NFV Concerto significantly reduces development and test cycle times for virtualized network functions by automating functional, performance, scalability and compliance testing. This solution is a testament to TCS’ expertise on Intel processor-based platforms and  OpenStack, understanding of partner VNFs and extensive experience in next generation product engineering technologies. TCS would continue to create such digital solutions and frameworks to accelerate product development cycle and hence creating a differentiator in the marketplace.”

Adds Nishi Kant, Vice President of Mobile Networking at Brocade:“With open interfaces and ground-up design for virtualized environment, our vEPC fits well in Concerto framework while efficiently serving high volume data and latency sensitive VoLTE”

And Brandon Harper, SVP at Metaswitch, says: “We are pleased to join TCS’s demonstration of a VoLTE NFV solution that operators can deploy today.”

Scott Westlake, VP Business Development at Ixia, adds: “Continuous validation and integration are critical to NFV service innovation, time-to-market, and customer experience. We’re excited to be demonstrating how Ixia enables these benefits for carriers.”

Renu Navale, Director of the Intel Network Builder programme, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corporation said “System integration is a key aspect of NFV deployments – Integrating VNFs from companies such as Brocade and Metaswitch, and test solutions from Ixia into deployable solutions will help accelerate adoption and time to deployment for service providers.”
