Andhra govt to use Google publishing tool Navlekha

August 22, 2019:  The Government of Telangana and Google  have  signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve and get more local language content online using Google’s digital publishing tool - Navlekha.
Under the memorandum, Google will work with the Telangana State Government to help digitise the government’s content in Telugu to make it easier for the common man to get access to all the information and services on government sites in their local languages. In addition, Google will also collaborate with the government to support its digital literacy vision and aiding in the overall digitization agenda of the state.
Navlekha is an initiative by Google, to empower offline newspaper and magazine in India with simple but powerful new technology to bring their content online in just a few clicks.
The road from print to web page is tricky today. In addition to challenges such as buying a domain, hosting and maintaining a webpage, it’s extremely difficult to copy text in non-Unicode Indian language fonts from PDF to web pages without a special scanner. That makes it very hard for Indian language publications to bring their content online. Navlekhâ uses AI to quickly render any PDF with Indian language content into editable text, overcoming issues that usually occur when you try to copy text in Indian languages from a PDF.

Introduced in 2018, Navlekhâ has started onboarding offline publishers and the program is currently open for Hindi & Telugu offline publishers. Registered Indian language publishers who are looking to create an online presence can sign up for the programme at g.co/navlekha.
