Thiruvananthapuram, January14 2016: Kerala's nodal Tourism department is all set to launch a programme to equip all tourist houseboats in the state with Global Positioning System-based fleet safety management system, reports The Hindu.
Houseboats will be tracked using the Keltron-iTAC, a vehicle-tracking and fleet-management solution, developed by the state's electronics PSU. There will be SOS/panic buttons for timely emergency response, and the route taken by a houseboat will be geo-fenced to prevent route violations.
The fleet safety management system is anafter effect of the recommendations made by a nine-member committee, headed by the then Tourism Secretary Suman Billa, that looked into houseboat safety following a January 26 2013 tragedy that resulted in the death of four tourists at the Punnamada lake in Allapuzha .
