May 19 2014: An incredibly simple app lets travelers instantly translate printed words in a foreign language, with their phone’s camera.
Word Lens gives you translation on the go: NO NETWORK required - results appear immediately on your video screen when you need it, anywhere in the world. It's easy to use, like the regular camera
WordLens is available for
+ English to Russian and vice versa+ English to Spanish and viceversa+ English to French and vice versa+ English to Italian and vice versa+ English to German and vice versa+ English to Portuguese and vice versa
The app is best used on clearly printed text (e.g. signs, menus) . It DOES NOT recognize handwriting or stylized fonts . It's not perfect, but you can get the general meaning! Keep text in focus by holding it at least one hand-length away and tap-to-focus if autofocus is struggling.Turn on the flashlight (if available on your device). Zoom in (if available on your device). If you have a problem contact the makers at this email help@questvisual.com
As we upload this story, we hear that WordLens is also available for Google Glass. For example with your Google gass on, command “Translate this”, as you look at a sign in a foreign language brings up the translation right before your eyes.
Now will Indian app developers and state tourism agencies get started on creating translation of Indian languages into international tongues?
