DRDO shows off its drone swarm expertise

November 23 2011:The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) demonstrated offensive capabilities of its drone swarms at a three-day ‘Rashtra Raksha Samarpan Parv’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi on 17 November, .
The DRDO Young Scientist Laboratory for Asymmetric Technologies has been working on drone swarm technologies towards strengthening the asymmetric warfare capabilities, an official statement said
“The DRDO demonstrated fully operational decentralised UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) swarm comprising of 25 drones flying coherently with minimal human intervention”, added the statement
The display showcased the drones’ unique capabilities of “distributive sensing, distributive decision making, reconfigurable path planning and autonomous attack formations”.The swarm enacted real-time scenarios like target encirclement, coordinated attack and many others in Jhansi.
Indo-US co-development
In a related development, the Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defence  have signed a Project Agreement under which the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will co-develop an Air-Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ALUAV).with the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL),  ( source: courtesy IMR)
