Bangalore, October 9 2017: The industry-wide upgrade to 5G-- expected to start in 2020, -- offers a broad spectrum of opportunity: with seamless and centralized networks, amazingly fast, reliable and realtime, says Mombasawala Mohmedsaeed General Manager (Applications), Keysight Technologies.
He was delivering a keynote speech at the recently concluding Keysight Measurement Insight (KMI) 2017 here, an annual signature event on digital & wireless test technologies, that serves as a platform to share the latest industry trends and technologies like 5G, IoT, Smart Car, Software, High Speed Digital - USB Type C, PCI Express, MIPI, Memory, Millimeter Wave etc.
Mr Mohmedsaeed said the shift to 5G will see two parallel streams of development: the evolution of existing technology and a revolution with new technology that will see a tight interworking between existing technologies ( like Cellular & WLAN) and the new technology. He spelt out the key elements of both streams:
Evolution includes current cellular technologies – LTE/LTE-A/LTE-A Pro, LTE co-existence with WiFi also known as license assisted access (LAA); enhancement to machine type communication (MTC) or IoT/M2M etc, Evolution of WLAN, New waveforms and new radio access technology (RAT) , New frequency bands below 6 GHz , Ultra-dense networks – small cells and WLAN access points and Evolution of RAN architecture (C-RAN).
Revolution will come in Microwave and mmWave frequency bands (licensed and unlicensed), Wide bandwidth – up to 2 GHz or wider, Massive MIMO, New waveforms and new radio access technology (RAT) , Full duplex, Software based network architecture: SDN and NFV.
In this roadmap, why do we care about MIMO?
MIMO is evolving quickly with LTE FD-MIMO and now with emerging 5G. Massive MIMO is a key component of 5G.
Keysight has a key role( pun intended!) to play in this global lurch to 5G because all 5G systems need to be test-bed-tried and validated -- and test and measurements are a core activity in this phase.
Over-the-air testing
A new wave of testing has come: Testing Over The Air: The cable is gone! Commercial mmWave and Massive MIMO are bringing a new paradigm to 5G-centric testing and much of this can now be done without cables.|
Speaking to IndiaTechOnline on the sidelines of the KMI event, Mr Mohmedsaeed, and Keysight Technologies India Country Head Sandeep Kapoor pointed to Keysight's recent launch: the industry's First 5G RF Design Verification Test Toolset which will be critical to accelerate development Of next-generation 5G mobile devices. The 5G RF DVT Toolset is the latest solution in Keysight's 5G network emulation solution (NES) portfolio and allows the design engineer to easily create and customize RF and radio resource management (RRM) test cases.
