Netflix extends India reach through multiple mobile and satellite TV tie-ups

Bangalore, March 7 2016: Just over a year after it launched an India edition,  Netflix, the world's largest Internet-based television provider  has  signed up with multiple Indian partners in the mobile phone and satellite TV space.
The service will soon be available on phones through Airtel and Vodafone while Direct to Home (DTH) provider  Videocon D2H   has used the opportunity of a Netflix tie up to launch a new Internet-connected set top box.  Its subscribers will now have the option to upgrade and turn their TVs into Smart TVs -- indeed this is the only way they can leverage the extensive library of Netflix TV and movie titles. They will now find a  dedicated Netflix button on the remote control of HD Smart Connect Set Top Box.|
The set top box can be connected to the internet through any Wifi or Ethernet connection in the home for accessing a curated set of applications available through the internet. The minimum internet speed needed is 2 Mbps. These apps, both free and paid cover a range of content genres and utility apps.
Says Saurabh Dhoot, Executive Director Videocon d2h: “This partnership in India with Netflix gives the customers the simple click of a button to easily select between our DTH and world class apps like Netflix services on the HD Smart Connect Set top box.”
Adds Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix who is currently in India: “While there are millions of consumers all over the world using Netflix, enjoying the ability to watch anywhere, anytime and the incredible variety of programming we offer, we are really only at the beginning of our journey here in India."
With these tie ups, Netflix will try and close the gap between its  user numbers in India and those of  competitors like Hotstar  and will also take on the recently launched  Amazon Prime video service.
