April 6 2014: With a full page wrap around advertisement in India's largest newspaper, The Times of India last week, Amazon reminded Indians that 2 months short of its first anniversary in June, the world's largest e-tailer had already become the largest online retailer here as well.
In June 2013, Amazon launched its India site with just two categories. Ten months down the road, their total offerings now stand at over 15 million products across 20 categories. Amazon claims to be the largest online store in several categories, including books, music, video games, toys, home and kitchen appliances, bags, luggage and fashion jewellery.
Amazon's closest competitors in India are indigenous players, FlipKart who recently announced it had crossed $1 billion in revenue and Snapdeal which is in sight of this target by year end.
In its Times ad., Amazon reminded customers of its guaranteed one day delivery options and the ease of returns. In a highly competitive arena, players like Flipkrat have been quick to offer similar facilities within days.
