Virtualization pioneer and leader, VMware will soon extend the benefits of its solutions to a variety of mobile platforms. The company is engaged with mobile handset leader LG in a pilot programme to port its flagship tools to Android-based smart phones, says T.Srinivasan, Managing Director VMware India & SAARC. He told IndiaTechOnline that the company will provide a virtualization layer such that personal and enterprise data are separate. This is the next step in virtualization that VMWare will offer he added.
For young aspirants he suggested :”We have not attained even 10 percent of virtualization's potential in India – so clearly this is a big opportunity – career-wise”.
In a related development VMWare has just announced the the availability of VMware View Client for iPad on the Apple App Store for free. Enabling Apple iPad users to access their virtual Windows(1 desktops, applications and data from anywhere, the new VMware View Client, in combination with VMware View, delivers a modern desktop optimized for the iPad's high-resolution Multi-Touch display. Last week the company also launched Cloud Foundry, the industry’s first open Platform as a Service (PaaS). In a conference-call for Asia-Pac media, Mike Warrilow, VMware’s Sr. Manager of Products and Solutions for the region explained that represents a new generation of application platform, architected specifically for cloud computing environments and delivered as a service from enterprise data centres and public cloud service providers.
Also announced were a new open source PaaS project and the first ever “Micro Cloud” PaaS solution – a single developer module that would be freely downloadable after June 2011, to encourage grassroots development in the virtualized cloud arena. The announcement will be of particular interest in India which has a large ecosystem of virtualizaton developers. ( see link below for free registration).
Both Warrilow and Srinivasan stressed that India was one of the most important markets for VMWare – and also the source of many innovations being added to its offerings worldwide.
On his recent visit to India VMware CEO Paul Maritz said the company was investing heavily here both in the quality and quantity of its field and sales operations, but added "The opportunity is so big that we have do it with partners. We can't do it ourselves”. The company has over 1800 clients in India – and 230 partners.
