Dielbold's latest ATM, made in India, taps 3 energy sources including solar

Mumbai, March 2, 2013: The India subsidiary of US-based leader in secure self-service delivery systems, Diebold, has designed, developed and manufactured what is being called the world's first ‘intelligent-powered’ automated teller machine (ATM) which can switch automatically between three possible power sources (solar panel, alternating current (AC) grid and internal battery). The Diebold 429 is thus ideal for deployment in power-challenged environments, especially the rural hinterland.By utilizing alternative power sources, such as solar panels and an AC grid, the 429 also provides improved power efficiency, consuming approximately 40 percent less energy than the previous generation of cash dispensers available in the Indian market. The self-service terminal also has an integrated four-hour battery backup for enhanced ATM reliability.

While  primarily developed for India where  many locations outside the metros suffer from irregular mains power, the 429 is  likely to find  markets abroad as well -- thanks to its international specs. The Diebold 429 is equipped with  an optional single-note acceptor (SNA) that enables small-volume currency deposits and bill payments at the ATM as well as a global set of security features—including Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) card reader, biometric technology and provision for dual security cameras which e comply with the latest National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regulatory requirements.
Says Diebold’s Vice President, Asia Pacific Wico van Genderen: "The Diebold 429 ATM was designed, developed and manufactured in India to meet the government's inclusion initiatives to expand banking services across India. It is tailored to enable deployment across a wide range of rural and urban locations previously out of reach, and at the same time provide a high-level of convenience, enhanced security, functionalities, availability and technology innovation our customers come to expect from Diebold."
