Direct digital TV broadcasts without set top box imminent in India
Look Ma, no set top box!

Global consortium of 7 players,  including  2  TV makers, launched  in Mumbai
Bangalore July 25 2012: The availability of a new television technology which combines satellite-based TV channel feeds with high definition pictures and web browsing – while doing away with a set top box -- is imminent.
And India is its first testing ground – with two TV set makers – Videocon and Philips – likely to be the first to offer receivers tailored to receive Digital Direct Broadcasts. They are joined by 5 other cloud, electronic component and audio/video technology players – STMicroelectronics, Irdeto, Nivio, Faroudja and Strata – as co-founders of the DDB Foundation which was globally launched in Mumbai last month, with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra as brand ambassador.
With the DDB technology, digital signals are received without the need for a set-top box. . It also has the ability to convert 2D channels into live-like 3D quality while giving one the ability to browse websites including Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. Considering the complete Digitalization of TV in India, by 2015, mandated by government, this technology seems to be a challenge to existing Direct to Home or DTH set top box based digital options. This technology has been pioneered by STMicroelectronics ( semiconductors), Irdeto (software and application maker), Nivio (cloud computing), Strata (sound technology), Videocon d2h and Phillips.
Here are more details from the DDB website:
