Facebook crosses 1 billion users a day worldwide; launches Moments photo app in India

August 29 2015: Facebook usage has crossed 1 billion users in a single day,  CEO Mark Zuckjerberg  has reported.
It was started  on the campus of Harvard University  in 2004, as TheFacebok.com  and t was essentially an online directory for the university's students. A year later, it had expanded to 800 campuses and had 2.8 million users.Today Facebook has  a market capitalization of over $250 billion.
In a message  to users yesterday  Zuckerberg  wrote:
"We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday ( August 24), 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.
When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world.
I'm so proud of our community for the progress we've made. Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world.
A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values.
Thank you for being part of our community and for everything you've done to help us reach this milestone. I’m looking forward to seeing what we accomplish together."

This week Facebook is launching a new standalone app called Moments in India.
When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you’re in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out.

For a few days we have a video on Moments in our Tech Video spot
on the home page.

If you come back later, find it here

Syncing photos with the Moments app is a private way to give photos to friends and get the photos you didn’t take. Moments groups the photos on your phone based on when they were taken and, using facial recognition technology, which friends are in them. You can then privately sync those photos quickly and easily with specific friends, and they can choose to sync their photos with you as well. Now, you and your friends have all the photos you took together.
Moments also keeps all of your synced photos organized and even lets you search them to find the ones that you or specific friends are in. Moments also automatically creates beautiful movie compilations of your best photos, synchronized to music, that you can quickly customize and share with friends.
Moments uses facial recognition technology to group your photos based on the friends who are in them. This is the same technology that powers tag suggestions on Facebook. You can control tag suggestions in your Settings.
Moments is a Facebook Creative Labs app. It is launching today in India on iOS and Android
