Xerox breathes intelligence into document -- and printer -- with new ConnectKey tools

Bangalore, August 13, 2013: Business process and document management leader Xerox has introduced   multi function printers in four series of their WorkCentre  range, fuelled by new technology that tightly integrates the printer to the cloud on one hand and to user's mobile devices on the other. As a result,   the technology called Xerox ConnectKey, breathes intelligence into  documents and a slew of new user-friendly features into the printer.

At a release event in Bangalore today,  Anil Arora, Xerox India's General Manager and Head -- Business Solution and Services,  gave a demo of the power of ConnectKey by  feeding a printout of an Excel spreadsheet into the printer, to have it scanned and  turned into a live  and editable Excel sheet where one could make changes to  data fields,  store the document in soft form or send it to any ConnectKey-enabled printer anywhere  and have it printed remotely.
The tool similarly handles most popular document formats like Word, PowerPoint or PDF.Virtually eliminating the PC or server as a necessary element of the printer's ecosystem,  ConnectKey significantly strengthens -- and simplifies -- the system manager's  function with a whole slate of remote management options  that include the ability to  set multiple printer  defaults -- a Powerpoint would  automatically print 6 to a page;  web downloads would print in monochrome and colour can be controlled to kick in at certain hours,  or  be inhibited on certain days -- unless overridden.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ConnectKey is the new operating system and controller for Xerox multifunction printers (MFPs).

·        One can print from just about any device from anywhere.

·        Documents can be scanned directly to cloud services like Google Drive, Evernote, Office 365 for storage and collaboration – right from the MFP touch screen

·        The new common user interface also allows anyone in the workforce to easily connect into the company’s business processes

·        For IT professionals, this common user interface as well as embedded security protection from McAfee allows MFPs to be managed and protected as easily as the rest of the network

The ConnectKey MFP platform has an open API system. That means sales channel partners, systems integrators and resellers can develop applications and embed them on the MFP with no additional software requirements

Industry firsts include the ability to:

·        Scan excel sheets directly in native excel editable formats & scan to searchable PDFs for easy retrieval

·        Remote access of MFPs by technical experts for training & break-fix services for faster customer response time

·        Connect-Key Apps- Users can download free Apps from Xerox Website directly on MFPs just like we do on our business phones

·        Directly  print  from iOS ( Apple) enabled devices.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xerox India's Executive Director, Technology, Channels and International Business, Vipin Tuteja,  quoted Gartner's finding that  companies spend an average of 1.3% of  annual budget on printing, to suggest that  ConnectKey was a key inflection point in the way  printers could be intelligently -- and economically --deployed.

To  enable the current trend of Bring Your Own Device or BOYD, Xerox has  created free apps  like the Mobile Express Driver which  Automatically detects your location based on your local network, tells you instantly which printers are online and available to you every time you print, sorts devices in your printer list based on status, location, name, etc,  displays detailed feature options to help you choose the best printer for your job... and importantly, works with Xerox and non-Xerox PostScript  printers.

The new printers fuelled by ConnectKey include WorkCentre 7830/7835/7845/7855MFPs; WorkCentre 5845/5855/ 5865/5875/5890  MFPs as well printers  in the 7200,  and CQ9300 series.

M. Venkat RaoXerox India's Regional Business Head for South India explained that 7 of India's top cities for MFP business lie in the South. The company has blanketed all 103 districts in the southern states with 60 plus direct  presence and  300 'feet on street' sales and service personnel.

"Arab countries, Are those stresses going to wipe out coral reefs and fisheries around the globe, exactly? especially in such a vast marketplace dominated by a relatively small handful of bestsellers. for instance, in "Rocky V. Tim, voiceover of atelevision ad by the New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has weighed in dramatically in the House special election to replace former Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. with his political action committee Independence USA on the race target former Rep Debbie Halvorson who had taken pro-gun stands as a Democrat from a largely rural district but is now trying to make a comeback in a more urban area of the state These ads are hard-hitting and negative with similar themes The messages has been further reinforced through Lets check their accuracy (All are variations on the theme expressed in the text above)The FactsAs is typical with negative ads there is a big difference between the literal text of the ad and the images and messages that it sends For instance the ad notes that as a member of Congress Halvorson an A rating from the NRA Then the ad describes some of the NRAs positions on proposed gun laws while displaying a photograph of HalvorsonThe implication particularly to a casual viewer watching the ad is that these NRA positions are also Halvorsons current positions But her stand on guns has evolved particularly on background checks says she backs: "Stiff penalties for straw buyers; universal background checks and registration of all firearms; making sure that background checks work so people do not fall through the cracks in the national database; ending the gun show loophole"On the campaign trail Halvorson has while maintaining and on restricting the size of ammunition magazines The NRA has not made an endorsement in this race and certainly Halvorsons current stand on universal background checks would not please the organization (We did not get a response from an NRA spokesman) On its Web site the lobbying arm of the NRA that says universal background checks "turn traditional innocent conduct into a criminal offense"Stefan Friedman a spokesman for the Independence USA said that "the ad is crystal clear that it is the NRA that opposes background checks" Friedman noted that Halvorson as a state lawmaker when the Illinois Senate to make buyers at gun shows undergo background checks and was never a co-sponsor of a similar bill in the House "Considering the NRA tends to not hand out A+ ratings to candidates who support background checks and closing gun loopholes perhaps she should come clean if shes always supported background checks and closing gun loopholes or if this is just an election-year conversion" he saidRegarding the bill that Halvorson co-sponsored the ad is referring to HR 179 the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act which would make state permits to carry a concealed firearm valid in other states that permit concealed weaponsThe bill went nowhere during her term in office but (with the support of 43 Democrats) in in 2011 though it was never taken up by the Senate The ads reference to "some criminals" carrying concealed guns across state lines refers to the fact that different states have different rules for obtaining a permit Thus a state such as Ohio which (such as two assaults within five years) would have to allow someone from a state with lesser standards to carry a weapon if they arrived in Ohio with a valid permit But heres the rub: The only state that prohibits any concealed weapons is Illinois though the law leaving its future in limbo If Illinois did approve a law allowing concealed weapons at this point it is unclear that it would adopt rules as restrictive as say Ohio In fact the initial news release on this ad incorrectly said that this bill "would allow criminals to carry loaded hidden guns in Chicago" Thats wrong but Friedman says it was an error in the release and never ran in an ad The Pinocchio TestThese ads cut very close to the line The description of the NRA positions are correct but the photograph of Halvorson suggests guilt by association even though she has since distanced herself from the NRA and taken a more nuanced approach toward potential gun restrictions in her current race Moreover the ad conjures up the image of criminals entering the state with hidden guns even though the bill she co-sponsored has never become law and its possible impact on Illinois residents is unclearTwo Pinocchios()Check out our candidate Follow The Fact Checker on and friend us on Venus and Serena Williams advanced to the womens doubles semifinal with a 6-3."

the last six as the bossHis departure is a loss for Butler but more than that it is a punch in the stomach for college basketball Stevens wasnt just one of the best and the brightest he was one of the college games truly good peopleHe won 166 games in those six years helming Butler an average of just fewer than 28 victories a season If he had maintained that average for the next 30 seasons granted easier said than done he would have been at 1000 victories at 66 the same age Mike Krzyzewski the college games all-time winningest coach (957 wins) is right nowTheres no doubt that money played some role in this decision Butler was reportedly paying him about $12 million per year and his contract was through 2022 Thats very good money with lots of job securityBut the Celtics according to several reports will pay him $22 million over the next six years meaning his salary will at least triple Stevens has two young children and that kind of money will create a lot of financial security for them Whats more if the NBA doesnt work for him athletic directors will line up around the block for the chance to return him to the college gameThere will of course be those who will point out the lack of success college coaches have had making the transition to the NBA Most will fail to point out that in almost every case including Rick Pitinos disastrous run with the Celtics from 1997 until 2001 the coach was taking over a very bad team In fact Pitino had success in New York when he first made the college-to-NBA jump from Providence in 1987Clearly Stevens isnt being handed the keys to a very good team Ainge made the decision to go back to square one on draft night when he agreed to trade Kevin Garnett (who is older than Stevens) Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets for in essence three No 1 draft picks As of now the Celtics are Rajon Rondo and a bunch of reasonably good role players The days of the Big Three Garnett Pierce and Ray Allen that led the Celtics to an NBA title in 2008 and the finals in 2010 are long goneIf the Celtics make the playoffs next season Stevens should be coach of the year More likely theyll be in the lottery and they can begin restocking with the first of the nine first-round draft picks they now own in the next five draftsThats one reason why this is such a brilliant hire The Celtics are going to be a young team and Stevens will be the perfect young coach to mold them in the same kind of tough-minded get-after-it-on-defense culture that he nurtured so well at Butler Its worth remembering that one person who didnt believe in the notion that a great college coach cant become a great NBA coach was Red Auerbach In 1990 he flew to Washington to meet secretly with a relatively young college coach who had made a name for himself by taking his team to four Final Fours and two national championship games in five yearsKrzyzewski almost took the job Auberbach offered that day "because it was the Celtics and because it was Red Auerbach" he said but ultimately stayed at DukeAuerbach wasnt around to woo Stevens but theres no doubt that Ainge was able to sell him on the fact that even when they are rebuilding the Celtics are still the NBAs signature franchiseUnder Stevens they will no doubt become The Celtics again And you can bet that somewhere in the Boston Garden in the sky Auerbach just lit up a cigarFor more by John Feinstein visit By a 44 to 35 percent margin."

"Judy Biggert (R-Ill."Though Republicans largely avoided any mention of abolishing HOME, "Winnie Mandela" opens with its subjects humble birth accompanied by syrupy music that would not be out of place in a story about the life of Jesus Christ It follows Winnie through her student years in Johannesburg where she trained as a social worker through her courtship with and marriage to lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela Its a union that doesnt have much time to put down roots Her husband is quickly imprisoned for sedition spending much of the remainder of the film behind bars as Winnie carries the movements torch from the outside at one point serving jail time herselfNevertheless the movie presents the Mandelas love as one of the great romances at times depicting the struggle for black liberation as a pesky hindrance to their being togetherDespite Toronto reviews that criticized (and not without reason) the films sentimentality and generally glowing depiction of Winnie as the "mother of the nation" Roodts film deserves credit for spotlighting some of the controversial figures warts One scene depicts her delivering her most infamous statement that "With our boxes of matches and our necklaces we shall liberate this country" That allusion to "necklacing" or placing an old car tire doused with gasoline around the necks of police informants and then burning them alive understandably shocked her husband who is shown in the film begging his wife to choose a more politically temperate pathThe films handling of the death of James "Stompie" Seipei is only slightly more equivocal The controversial 1989 murder of the teenage boy who was apparently killed by Winnies thuglike bodyguards and possibly in her own house if not with her consent is shown to take place behind closed doors During a prison visit however Winnie offers justification for the death of the alleged police informant to her appalled husband who not long after begins to contemplate divorceSo "Winnie Mandela" is not exactly gushing praiseIts portrait however is of a woman driven to extremes by love as much as politics In the end this feels like something of a narrative cop-out given the horrific nature of some of what Winnie Mandela has been accused of Still Hudson is a pleasure to watch when Winnie is beginning to bug out literally talking to insects while incarcerated For his part Howard remains a stolid background player a charismatic figure in both his romantic encounters with Winnie and before a crowd As the Mandelas chief tormentor police colonel de Vries Elias Koteas makes for a formidable if scenery-chewing screen presenceIts understandable why Winnie (now known as Winnie Mandikizela-Mandela since her 1996 divorce from her husband) would be upset about this film which cant seem to make up its mind about whether shes its heroine or antihero Whats less understandable is why Jakes signed on as producer Hes on record as saying that his production company only handles work with a message But whats painfully unclear is just what message "Winnie Mandela" is trying to deliver ???R At area theaters Contains violence and crude language 105 minutes and assistant managing editor in charge of the paper's award-winning Style section.Robinson is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and has received numerous journalism awards. And one thing is clear: there are a whole lot of them. in 2012, which drives up the cost of suppression:Yet Congress hasn't adapted to these trends. Then Credit Suisse analysts suggested Vivendi might instead take full control - although it's not clear whether this was ever seriously considered in Paris."The leaks, and potentially bring thefledgling economy to its knees. The remaining debates: Tell us the rulesTwo weeks ago there was an about how the rules set by the Commission on Presidential Debates are likely to be highly detailed down to the permissible lighting and camera shots how the moderators are supposed to ensure a balance in each candidate's allotted time during any back-and-forth and even a provision for the screening of notepaper the combatants could bring to the podium (to make sure it was blank)The HuffPo report drew on a the commission executed with the campaigns of President George W Bush and Senator John Kerry in 2004 and noted that "eighteen good-governance and media watchdog groups" have now demanded that this year's contract be publicly disclosedBut why is the press waiting for the commission and the campaigns to disclose what they obviously want to keep under wraps Why hasn't some reporter pried loose the text or at least the highlights of the 2012 contract There must be a half-dozen or more operatives in each camp plus at least as many debate commission officials who knowWith the controversy over moderator Jim Lehrer's allegedly too-laid-back performance in the first Obama-Romney debate the actual rules seem more relevant now than ever This is especially true because the second presidential debate on Oct 16 has a town hall format That means that beyond the moderator's stipulated role there are all kinds of issues related to the choice of the audience the nature and selection of the questions they can ask and what kind of follow-up is allowed from the citizen-questioners or the moderator Any of these dynamics could be pivotal which is why the 2004 contract included a whole series of special clauses governing only that town hall formatThese are the election's most important events Can't one of the hundreds of reporters covering campaign 2012 find out what rules have been negotiated and what the moderator is supposed to do if they are violated2 Why do wounded vets need charityLately I've been seeing lots of compelling television ads soliciting contributions for Wounded Warrior Project Inc a Jacksonville Florida-based non-profit that according to the ads and its mission statement supplies financial aid and rehabilitative services to "honor and empower wounded warriors"No this is not a suggestion for a story investigating whether the charity is a rip-off Yes the that this and other charitable organizations file with the IRS reveals that Wounded Warrior's top executive Steven Nardizzi made $341000 in the fiscal year ending September 2011 and seven other officials made in excess of $160000 each And the non-profit actually recorded an operating income of $16 million on $74 million in revenues including donations - or 22% But these salaries seem appropriate for an organization of this scope and this kind of surplus is normal for a growing non-profit Moreover Wounded Warrior has attracted a blue-ribbon board of directors that includes decorated veterans of all ranks and former Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi who is unpaidRather for me the very existence of the organization and its activities raise a more fundamental question: How did it come to be that the people who have so selflessly served our country have to rely on private charity for the kinds of rehabilitation and social work services that Wounded Warrior provides Indeed as I was watching one of its commercials pitching for donations to help the thousands of veterans who have been blinded or paralyzed or who must learn how to live in wheelchairs or with prosthetic devices I imagined that sitting next to me was someone from another country How embarrassed would I be explaining that our government doesn't provide all of these services in full - and therefore that our veterans had to form an organization to pass a tin cup aroundWhat's the Obama administration's explanation for Wounded Warrior's existence How about the Republicans who control Congress If it's the case that the Wounded Warrior Project is centered on important and laudable supplemental services (such as "family support" or the "stress relief events" for hospital doctors and nurses described in the IRS filing) on top of the billions the government already provides then someone needs to explain the seemingly basic services such as physical therapy and counseling that dominate the commercials and that are also described in the IRS filingBeyond that if these are predominantly supplementary services meant to provide aid beyond what government can do then why not put the arm on those in the private sector who profit the most when our soldiers go off to warWounded Warrior spent $577 million in fiscal 2011 according to its IRS report The Defense Department spends about $350 billion a year on all private contractors That produces one of the most prosperous sectors of the private economy yielding for example much of the $38 billion in operating income enjoyed last year by Lockheed Martin the nation's largest defense contractorIf those contractors kicked in say five one-hundredths of one percent of what they get from the Pentagon - a nickel for every hundred dollars - the Wounded Warrior budget would be quadrupled Why not ask some of the defense contractor CEOs if they'd be willing to do that3 Why wasn't JPMorgan indemnified for the sins of Bear StearnsNew York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's sued JPMorgan last week over alleged fraud by its Bear Stearns subsidiary in the marketing of mortgage-backed securities leading up to the Wall Street meltdown Since then the general narrative of JPM's defense has been that the bank had bought the sinking Bear Stearns at the behest of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department which hoped to avoid a systemwide meltdown Thus from JPMorgan's perspective this is an example of no good deed going unpunishedHowever as another thread of the JPM-Bear narrative has to do with how hard JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon bargained to get a fire-sale deal when he took over Bear Therefore according to Cohan Dimon and his bank should be responsible for the risks they took on along with the valuable assets they got at a lowball priceLeaving aside who's right I have one basic question that I hope a reporter asks Dimon: If the government was so desperate for you to rescue Bear why didn't you insist that it indemnify you from suits exactly like this one Did you and your lawyers screw up Or as I suspect is more likely if you tried to get indemnification but couldn't how can you argue now that you didn't willingly assume the risksPHOTO: Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney shakes hands with President Barack Obama as moderator Jim Lehrer gets up at the end of the first 2012 US presidential debate in Denver October 3 2012 REUTERS/Michael Reynolds/Pool analysis of actual performance through more subjective variables and a generally admiring stance on human cognition. One of the most striking deficiencies in economic theory that was exposed during the crisis was the disconnect between monetary economics and the institutional reality of the new regime of shadow banking and derivatives."

"Texas-based writer/artist won for cartoons that she created for Kaiser Health News,[JEN SORENSEN: ] it's possible to see harbingers of the future: Russians alarmed by the sudden visibility of corruption." by Issa and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich) continued the effort to suggest the existence of a scandal that the established facts do not supportLet us be clear: There was mismanagement at the IRS and IRS employees screened applications for tax-exempt status for further review based in part on the names of the organizations But there is absolutely no evidence of political motivation or White House involvement To the contrary IRS employees indicated that they sought guidance on how to process these applications in a consistent manner according to the law with one tax law specialist in Washington a self-identified Republican This reality was confirmed by the IRSs inspector general who testified under oath that he found no evidence of political motivation in the selection of the tax exemption applications Likewise the inspector generals top investigator who reviewed 5500 IRS employee e-mails found "" Rather this investigator explained that the e-mails showed that "the organizations needed to be pulled because the IRS employees were not sure how to process them not because they wanted to stall or hinder them" Republicans have also recently claimed as Issa and Camp wrote in their op-ed that progressive groups received "routine scrutiny" that was somehow fundamentally different from the systematic treatment of the tea party applications But Daniel Werfel the acting commissioner of the IRS disagrees He testified that there were progressive groups that were treated similarly to the tea party applicants with some facing three-year delays In fact he said some progressive groups were even denied tax-exempt status unlike the tea party applicants who were just delayed by the Oversight and Government Reform Committee confirm the acting commissioners conclusion including that directed IRS employees to look for "progressive" groups just like "tea party" groups and to in Cincinnati for heightened review and scrutiny We now know that IRS employees were also screening for Occupy Wall Street groups and sending those applicants to that same unit And contrary to Republican claims the that some tea party patriot and 9/12 applications were in fact approved by the IRS during the time of his review Many of these are documents that the inspector general a Republican appointee said he never reviewed when he conducted his initial audit Perhaps that is because the inspector general never investigated what happened to the progressive groups The inspector generals top auditor testified that "we dont know" whether tea party and patriot groups were treated predominantly different than occupy or progressive groups because they did not "audit" those groups In fact the inspector general only focused on less than 2 percent of the relevant tax-exempt applicants and even during that examination refused to tell the public how many of the groups that he reviewed were politically progressive The sad reality is that while House Republicans have devoted time and taxpayer money to attempting to smear the White House they have failed to examine part of the underlying problem the IRS faces: inadequate guidance on how to process applications of organizations seeking tax-exempt status Instead of misleading the public with inaccurate and inflammatory rhetoric Republicans should join Democrats in focusing on reform President Obama has already removed the former IRS commissioner installed an acting commissioner who is improving the process for reviewing applications for tax-exempt status and nominated a permanent commissioner In addition Democrats on our committees have pushed to clarify the law regarding tax-exempt status so IRS employees can do their jobs more efficiently Members of Congress must abandon their attempts to score political points and instead re-focus their efforts to confirming a new commissioner of the IRS restoring the publics trust in the agency and fixing the vague standards that   "that emulates a small laptop as well as the Envy x2 can be tricky. It simply looks fast. However, the Envy x2's Intel Atom Z2760 1.8GHz CPU, 2GB of low-power DDR2 memory and a 64GB eMMC SSD managed only an 18 on our WorldBench 8 test suite. The number says it's slow, but the Envy x2 feels lively enough that when you're hands-on, few will have complaints. It boots in 13.7 seconds, and there are no long lags. The Envy x2's integrated Intel GMA GPU is good for rendering movies with bit rates up to about 1.5MBps, but not gaming, at least with any sort of modern game at a decent resolution. Both the aforementioned cameras performed well. The test shots and video were normal for the ilk--fine in good lighting conditions, not so fine when conditions are less than ideal. The Beats audio app provides an emulated surround-sound that gives a nice sense of space for tunes and soundtracks, but there's not even a hint of bass. Again, normal for tablets. The Envy x2 has a dual-battery design: one 25-watt-hour unit onboard the tablet and another 21-watt-hour unit in the dock. Smart. The arrangement delivers excellent run times: 13 hours, and 22 minutes when docked and 8 hours and 31 minutes untethered as a tablet.Nice-looking, nice-feeling designThe brushed-metal finish of the Envy x2 feels good in the hand, and the unit's input ergonomics are excellent. The keyboard is short-travel, but has enough feedback so that you can set up a nice typing rhythm. The volume, screen brightness, media transport, etc. functions take precedence on the top row of keys, so you must hold the fn key to invoke F1, F2, etc. That's sensible given the most likely usage scenarios, but you can change it in the BIOS if you wish to swap precedence to the older standard. The touchpad is a rocker type with an exceptionally nice feel. The click function is shorter-travel than many, but silky.Software-wise, there's not a lot loaded beyond the standard applications. The OS is the 32-bit Windows 8 version (the Z2760 doesn't support 64-bit, but at least this is the full version, not RT), which, considering that you can't upgrade the memory past 2GB, is of no concern.Pricing is competitiveThe only upgrade available for the Envy x2 is a 128GB SSD for $100. The $700 price is a reasonable deal, and as of this writing it was available for even less than that from non-HP online stores, making it a very nice bargain. The Envy x2 carries a one-year warranty, though you can up it to the three-year variety including for $229. That includes pickup and return. We saw no other option so you might get a better deal in a drop-off, three-year plan from a box store.Nice as a light-use laptopThe Envy x2 is a looker, and a more than workable Windows 8 tablet. It's also eminently viable as a light-use laptop PC. All in all, a nice job, and yes, I was just a tad envious when I had to turn it back in.HP Envy100 e-All-in-One MFP Prints, Copies, and Scans in High Style HP's Envy100 e-All-in-One (for printing, copying, and scanning) makes being decorative a higher priority than being useful. Created with the same stylistic flair as HP's like-named laptops, such as the , the Envy100 gets green points for being free of PVC plastic and for having ink cartridges made with recycled materials. Unfortunately, the $250 price (as of November 30, 2010) does not buy you decent speed or cheap inks. Aesthetically pleasing rivals include the and the .Predominantly shiny black with silvery accents, and low-slung (just 4 inches high), the Envy100 e-All-in-One will blend easily into any modern d??cor. Turn it on, and you'll see its 3.45-inch color touchscreen LCD and touch-sensitive controls gleaming at you from the front panel. The panel is supposed to tilt up and down automatically during operation, but on our unit, this feature sometimes stalled. HP is working on a firmware fix for the inconsistency.Looks aside, the Envy100 is suitable for light use. An 80-sheet, letter/A4-size input drawer pulls out from the front. A narrow plastic output arm swings out to catch printed pages (up to 25 sheets) and retracts after you remove them. Automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the page) is standard for both the PC and Mac. The letter/A4-size flatbed scanner has a glass cover with an eye-catching finish that graduates from pure black to mirror. A discreet door covers a USB/PictBridge port and a media-card slot that takes MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, and SD Card media. HP's numerous Web apps are available through this machine, if you give it access to the Internet. The Envy100's minimalist approach went a bit too far with the documentation: The lack of printed setup help invites confusion, though detailed instructions are available from HP's Website. The HTML-based user guide leans heavily on animated how-to's, which might explain why the written instructions can be vague. No one is likely to buy the Envy100 for its speed. Plain-text pages plodded out at rates of about 4.8 pages per minute on the PC and 4.6 ppm on the Mac. Photos struggled, too: snapshot-size images appeared at a rate of 1.6 ppm on the PC, and our 22MB professional photo took just over 3 minutes to print on the Mac. Normal scans and copies posted middling times.Print quality is generally good. Text on plain paper looked crisp, though dark gray rather than black. Photos printed on plain paper looked a little faded and grainy; HP's own glossy stock smoothed out most of the problems. Our full-color copy test on plain paper yielded a fairly accurate, albeit grainy, reproduction. Color scans looked somewhat yellowish and hazy. One thing your neighbors won't envy is this MFP's high ink costs. The standard-size cartridges include a 200-page black for $15 (7.5 cents per page) and a 165-page unified tricolor for $20 (12.1 cents per page). The high-yield cartridges include a 600-page black for $35 (5.8 cents per page) and a 440-page unified tricolor for $41 (9.3 cents per page). A page printed in all four colors would cost 19.6 cents with the standard-size cartridges and 15.1 cents with the high-yield cartridges. The Envy100 e-All-in-One looks better than it works, but the fashion-forward users who are likely to consider this model probably have similar priorities. You can find other cool-looking models whose inks aren't quite so pricey, however.HP Folds Voodoo PC Business Unit has merged its Voodoo PC business unit with its consumer business, the company said Wednesday.Voodoo's laptops and desktops will now be sold alongside HP's consumer Compaq Presario and Pavilion PC lines, said Ann Finnie, an HP spokeswoman. "It is just the next step of integration into the business units that deliver Compaq Presario and [HP] Pavilion," she said. HP in 2006 paid an undisclosed amount to acquire Voodoo, which was then known for its cutting-edge gaming PCs. Voodoo was a stand-alone unit in HP and continued to sell its products independently. But HP always had plans to integrate Voodoo into its main PC business, Finnie said. The Voodoo desktops and notebooks bring style and the latest technology to HP's consumer PC lineup, Finnie said. Voodoo's products sold by HP include the Envy ultraportable laptop and the Omen gaming desktop.HP will retain Voodoo as a brand name, Finnie said. However, the convergence of the brand in HP's consumer catalog could mean larger worldwide availability for the high-end PCs."Ultimately it means that Voodoo and Voodoo-influenced products will be easier to buy, faster to get, they will feature local service, and they will have the full power of HP's marketing and sales channel behind them," said Rahul Sood, HP's CTO, in a . Sood was founder of VoodooPC, as the company was called before HP acquired it.Traditionally, HP's global business unit designs PCs and regional units decide what PCs to sell in the region, and that may apply to Voodoo PCs, Finnie said. For existing Voodoo customers, support and service won't change."Don't expect customers to see a difference," Finnie said.HP declined comment on potential layoffs resulting from the integration.HP HDX16: All-Purpose Multimedia Prepare to do a double-take with HP's HDX16. The short version: It is a trimmed-down take on . The HDX16 offers desktop replacement performance and features in an all-purpose notebook--and looks pretty slick in the process. Sure, its screen may be a little smaller, and it comes with a smaller hard drive. But if anything, this machine hits a sweet spot that its bigger brother can't match: A lower price. The HDX16 starts at $1050; our test unit's configuration will run you $1973. A comparable configuration on the HDX18 costs $2300. Otherwise, not much separates these two multimedia machines. How shall I count the ways? Let's start with performance. The HDX16 has some brawn to match its beauty. In our WorldBench 6 tests, HP's notebook scored a solid 100. It's not quite the fastest we've seen--the fared better--but it's more than powerful enough to play some games as well as video. (The HDX18 scored a 102 in WorldBench 6.) A 2.8-GHz Core2 Duo CPU (T9600), 4GB of RAM, and nVidia's 512MB GeForce 9600M GT GPU fuel our review unit. Yep, this has the same exact spec loadout under the hood as the 18.4-inch model. Now, I can spit out frame rates of games like Doom 3 (which achieved a respectable 90 frames per second at 1280-by-1024 resolution), but what matters is that the HDX16 is capable of playing this season's big guns without much of a hitch. I tooled around Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead on the screen's native 1920-by-1080 resolution. Both looked good and ran fairly smoothly. However, it didn't last quite as long as we would have liked. The HDX16's battery ran only 2 hours, 12 minutes in tests. That's pretty weak and not what one hopes for out of an all-purpose machine. So, if you're planning for a road trip, buy a beefier battery or just make sure that you keep the power brick close by.A little hefty for an all-purpose, this machine weighs 7.37 pounds with the power brick and measures 14.9 by 10 by 1.3 inches. It does have a 16-inch screen--which sits it right at the border between an all-purpose notebook and a desktop replacement portable. Like the HDX18, the glossy finish on the panel ensures that you'll never be alone--you'll always see your reflection. It isn't the highly polished, highly annoying sheen that you find on many glossy panels, but it's still hard to ignore. The important part is that everything from Blu-ray movies to the newest games come across looking great. Yep, this all-purpose machine manages to squeeze a BD-ROM drive into its price. Now this is how a multimedia machine is supposed to look. I mean, yes, there's an obnoxious HP logo on the back of the lid that lights up when on (thanks for showing the rest of the world that little trick, Apple), but the rest of the machine is laid out just as a meaty desktop machine should be. The unit we received in the lab sprouts eSATA and HDMI ports, three USB 2.0 ports, a 4-pin FireWire port, a multiformat flash card reader, and a PC Express card slot. An optional feature that also shows up in our review unit: HD and coax cable tuners for watching--and recording--TV shows on the system's 320GB hard drive. Combine all that with the flashy finish and neat exterior, and you've got yourself an incredibly handsome road-ready solution. The keyboard has a cool, metallic feel thanks to the coating--it doesn't have the premium etched-in lettering found in the HDX18 (so there you have it--now you know what the extra cash buys you). I wouldn't go and say that the keyboard beats out the ThinkPad line for its sensitivity, texture, and key response, but I'm going to at least give it a nod and put it up on my list. I also happen to love all the extra-tweaking multimedia buttons that line the top of the keyboard. The bright LED buttons might seem a little much, but they provide quick access to key multimedia features--and even provide the ability to tweak treble and bass without having to dig deep into software settings (though you can still do that here; more on that shortly). The mirrorlike touch pad is a little distracting, but in a good way, thanks to the art that carries over from the case across the mousing surface. It also feels smooth to the touch. And the mouse buttons? I'm getting spoiled here. Long, sturdy metallic buttons stand ready for duty. As with the HDX18, I'm happy with the sound setup on the HDX16. I know, I'm usually a huge curmudgeon when it comes to on-board audio, but this time around, the Altec-Lansing audio solution is anything but blah. The mids and highs seem a little off, but way better than how most "multimedia" notebooks handle those tones. Meanwhile, the down-firing subwoofer lurking underneath the notebook rounds out the sound. Audiophiles will approve of the Dolby sound equalizer software. It's not quite enough to topple the big audio dynamite often found in , but it's more than ample for rocking a room and without resort to headphones or external speakers. And to further tweak out the sound, IDT HD Sound software gives you quick and easy access to a ten-band equalizer--you can customize the sound spacializing (pushing sounds to different parts of your headphones to feel surrounded; it works to a decent effect).Speaking of software, I need to give a quick nod to the applications. They are slickly produced and suited perfectly for the hardware. You can tell that HP really thought about a nice multimedia interface with its MediaSmart software's sweet GUI interface and how the notebook's shortcut keys tie together. However, MediaSmart is technically bloatware--approximately 350MB that perform the same exact job as what Windows' Media Center software already does. Okay, it's a minor peeve considering that the 5400-rpm, 320GB hard drive is relatively clean from most other useless apps. I went a little easy on HP for the software on the HDX18 because on that model you have double the hard drive space. Here, you could soon find yourself hitting a wall. The question quickly becomes what you're comfortable carrying around with you. HP's HDX16 goes a long way toward bringing a good multimedia experience with you on the road, but it lacks the juice to last for the long haul (and, as a larger laptop, could be a bit much to lug around). On the other hand, it packs just enough of a performance punch to let you watch all the movies and play all the games you want while going mobile. But the kind of power this machine packs doesn't exactly come cheap.HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175nw Starts as a Bargain but Doesn't Stay One These days, don't come at much lower prices than the HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175nw. At just $350 (as of August 29, 2011), it offers print/scan/copy/fax capabilities--and a lot of connectivity--in a compact, shiny-black package. Unfortunately, the machine is rather slow and limited for busy home- or small-office users, and its toner is expensive. The LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP is pretty easy to install via USB or ethernet; though the WPS-only Wi-Fi setup is relatively bothersome, you'll need it to enjoy the machine's compatibility with cloud-printing services from HP and Dell.Using the 1.0 version installation CD, we encountered smeary-looking output when printing on heavier paper (including HP's own 220g glossy paper for color lasers). The problem arose only with certain applications, including Microsoft PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, and Photoshop. HP has incorporated a fix into the 1.1 version of the installation CD--and you can also find the fix online--but we wish that HP had made the update available for automatic download during installation. The driver update couldn't solve all the Laserjet Pro 100 Color MFP's performance problems. Chief among these: It's slow, printing plain text on plain paper at a rate of less than 11 pages per minute whether on the PC or the Mac-below the average for this product category. Copying speed was poky, and scanning speeds were interminable. On the Mac, a full-page photos took about 80 seconds to print; that works out to a speed of 0.75 ppm.Output quality ranged from competent to disappointing. Color images showed a subtle backdrop of very fine horizontal lines, which made images look slightly fuzzy. Scanned images had a distinctly yellow cast and harsh shadows. Line-art scans showed jagged curves and busy moiré patterning in intricate areas. The HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP has just enough features to handle a basic small- or home-office situation. Paper-handling features include a 150-sheet paper tray on the bottom of the unit, and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder for the letter-size scanner. The 50-sheet output tray is modest, and duplexing is manual only. There are no media-card slots. The LaserJet 100 M175nw uses a fairly unique rotating cartridge system. A button on the control panel positions each cartridge for removal, however, you must close the cover before you rotate to the next cartridge, which makes replacing multiple cartridges quite tedious.Of greater concern is the price HP charges for its toner cartridges. The 1200-page black cartridge costs $50, or 4.2 cents per page, while the 1000-page magenta, yellow, and cyan cartridges cost $56 apiece or 5.4 cpp. Altogether, a four-color page costs a whopping 20.4 cents. We've seen remanufactured and compatible toner cartridges offered online for about 40 percent lees. The documentation is well written and thorough, but it's available online only. We remembered why we didn't like this approach when we ran into a dead end ('page not found') while seeking help on how to change the toner cartridges. The HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175nw sports a low price tag, but it makes you pay in other ways, from time idling as you wait for output to appear, to high toner costs. There aren't many good options at this low end of the category, but the is a little faster.HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw Review: Nice Laser Printer Is Duplex-Deprived The $450 (as of March 9, 2012) HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw has nice output and is relatively speedy considering the price. However, it suffers from the same pricey toner of most entry-level color laser printers, and it lacks the automatic duplexing found in HP's slightly more expensive 'dn' and 'dw' variants. Our test M451nw was decently constructed. You can easily access the slide-out toner tray and paper path through a fold-down front panel. A pop-off panel on the right side makes it simple to upgrade the unit's standard 128MB of memory to 384MB. The one slightly bothersome component is the bottom-mounted, letter/legal standard paper tray. The tray itself is sturdy enough, but the latch holding it inside the printer offers barely any resistance. HP says it designed the tray to be easy to open, but instead the company managed to make it feel insecure. The M451nw's controls are adequate for what is really a simple device. You get a two-way rocker button for navigating the two-line LED. That's fine for general operation, but not for manual Wi-Fi setup: You need to attach the printer via USB or ethernet to set up the wireless, unless your router offers WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).Paper-handling features are sufficient for a small office or workgroup--if the users aren't too far from the printer. Otherwise, this model's lack of an automatic duplexer will wear on those who must constantly run to the printer to reinsert documents for two-sided printing. The 250-sheet input tray, 50-sheet multipurpose tray, and 150-sheet output tray are satisfactory given the unit's roughly 2000-sheet recommended monthly cycle. If not, a bottom-mounted, $143, 250-sheet auxiliary paper feeder is available. The M451nw??s speed is middling, and sometimes slower than average. Printing mostly plain, black text and a few simple grayscale graphics on plain paper, it posted below-average rates of 11.7 pages per minute (ppm) on the PC and 10.3 ppm on the Mac. Snapshot-sized photos printed faster than average on plain paper, but slower than average on HP??s own photo paper??basically a wash. A full-page photo printed on glossy paper took 80 seconds to print, compared to an average of 60 seconds. A PDF document consisting of several full-color pages was the standout, printing almost twice as fast as the average. Compared with similarly priced color laser printers, the M451nw's per-page costs are decent. Next to business or in the same price range, however, they're exorbitant. The standard black toner cartridge costs $79 and lasts 2200 pages, or 3.6 cents per page. The cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges cost $114 and last for 2600 pages, or 4.4 cents per page per color. That makes a four-color page cost 16.7 cents, a hair below the average for color lasers. A high-yield black cartridge available for $102 lasts for 4000 pages, reducing black costs to 2.5 cents per page and four-color to 15.6 cents per page. The cartridges that ship with the unit last approximately 1400 pages. The text the M451nw produces is outstanding--dark and sharp. Color photos are also quite good for a color laser at this price point, though as with most HP printers, human faces have an orange cast. Our full-page photo showed a cool color palette, and nice rendering of fine details. The M451nw offers an economy mode to save toner. Output in this mode is legible, but only just. If you're going to spend any time perusing the document, or if it's for public consumption, you'll want to print at regular quality. The HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw's lack of an automatic duplexer is an issue that you can overcome by opting for the $500 M451dn (no Wi-Fi) or the $550 M451dw (with Wi-Fi and, despite the absence of the letter n in the name, ethernet). Alas, neither of those models can solve the problem of high per-page costs. Consider a high-end business inkjet MFP instead, which could save you a bundle on supplies over time. Alternative lasers in this price range include the and the .HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw Review: Nice Output Quality, Mediocre Speed and Toner Costs The $750 (as of June 29, 2012) HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw lacks nothing in the way of hardware features. Its connectivity and paper handling are top-notch, though its capacity is just enough for a small workgroup (the printer's intended audience). It produces exceptional photo prints for the price, and its text is also quite nice. Its biggest drawback is its pedestrian speed. The M475dw features USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi, so you may connect it in any way and any location you wish. A USB cable is included in the box. Setup is a breeze, and the 3.5-inch touchscreen control panel makes joining a Wi-Fi network, and performing other tasks, easy. The software that HP provides for scanning and OCR is excellent, and the driver is full-featured. The company's print-by-email ePrint functionality is available too.Paper handling on the M475dw is first-rate. Duplexing is automatic. Aside from the letter/A4-size flatbed scanner, the unit supports legal-size paper in every respect. You'll find a 250-sheet bottom tray, plus a 50-sheet all-purpose feeder that folds down from the front of the unit. If the M475dw's 300-sheet paper capacity doesn't cut it for your group, a bottom-mounted 250-sheet paper feeder is available for $115. A 150-sheet output tray sits on top of the MFP, underneath the scanner unit. The scanner component includes a 50-sheet automatic document feeder that can scan and copy two-sided to two-sided.The other notable physical features of the M475dw are the USB port on the front for printing and offloading scans, and the supereasy access to the toner cartridges. For the latter, you simply fold down the front panel, slide out a tray, and pop in replacements. The horizontal orientation means that you would have to try very hard to spill toner during the replacement process.Toner costs for the M475dw are a mixed bag: The black toner is a little pricier than average, overshadowing the cheaper-than-average color toner costs. The 2200-page black cartridge costs $84, or about 3.8 cents per page; the average is 3.4 cents per page. A higher-yield, $104 black lasts for 4000 pages, or 2.6 cents per page. The 2600-page cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges cost $120 apiece, for a per-page, per-color cost of 4.6 cents per page. At its cheapest, a four-color page will cost you a middling 16.4 cents. An empty SODIMM slot behind an easily removed cover on the right side of the MFP allows you to upgrade the standard 192MB of memory. HP, of course, will sell you the part--for a cool $600. No, that's not a typo. A better option is to fill the slot with a standard 256MB DDR2 part that you can grab online for less than $50.The M475dw delivers average speed when printing color. In our tests, a 4-by-6-inch photo printed to plain paper at 3.3 pages per minute and to glossy photo paper at 2.0 ppm. A full-page color photo took 72 seconds (0.8 ppm). Monochrome pages, on the other hand, printed slower than on the majority of the competition, emerging at a rate of 11.6 ppm on our PC and 10.2 ppm on our Mac. The M475dw truly lagged in making copies, with only 2.6 pages arriving per minute.A barn burner it's not, but the M475dw's output is worth the wait. Text appears supersharp, and color graphics look very nice. Photos are excellent for a laser printer, and copies seem quite good as well. The unit has a bit of a problem printing fine curves, but that deficiency is noticeable only under close scrutiny. Scans of line art are merely fair, a result that is probably related to the issue with curves. The M475dw carries a one-year limited warranty and has a monthly duty cycle rated at 40,000 pages. The recommended monthly volume is 1000 to 2500 pages. The unit's construction seemed very solid in our hands-on, and it's a good bet that with careful maintenance, this MFP will outlive its warranty by a hefty margin.HP's LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw is a solid product, with nice output, average toner costs, and middling speed. The company also sells a "dn" model that saves you $100 if you don't need Wi-Fi. If you're looking for alternatives, competing MFPs include the , , and .HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color Printer M451dn Review: Great Output, Pricey Toner The $500 (as of April 2, 2012) HP LaserJet Pro 400 M451dn produces extremely nice output--including photos--and is very speedy for a model in this price range. It also has an automatic duplexer, a feature missing from the $450 that we recently reviewed. It sounds great--until you examine the toner costs, which are steep for a relatively high-volume printer. The controls on the M451dn are minimal but adequate. A two-way rocker button lets you navigate the two-line LED; the panel also has a warning light, along with the usual OK, cancel, and back buttons. Software installation is easy via either USB or ethernet, and the printer dialog procedure is well thought-out.Paper-handling features include a 250-sheet bottom main tray, an automatic duplexer, a 150-sheet output tray, and an optional ($143) bottom-mounted, 250-sheet auxiliary paper feeder. With a monthly duty cycle of 40,000 pages and a recommended actual monthly print volume of up to 2000 pages, the M451dn can handle a fair amount of printing. In terms of access, the M451dn is extremely well designed. From the front you can fold out a small part of the panel to reveal the 50-sheet front multipurpose tray, or you can move a larger part of the panel to access the paper path and the slide-out toner tray. A pop-off panel on the right side of the printer makes it easy to upgrade the standard 128MB of memory to 384MB. Note: As of this writing, HP's website sells a 256MB DDR2 DIMM memory upgrade for $599. That exorbitant price comes with HP??s guarantee that the memory will work in the printer, but third-party memory is available for less than $30.That brings me to the Achilles' heel of this printer: toner costs. The standard black toner cartridge costs $79 and lasts 2200 pages, or 3.6 cents per page. A high-yield black cartridge, available for $102, lasts for 4000 pages, reducing black costs to 2.5 cents per page. The costs are a little higher than average compared with those of other color lasers we??ve tested--and incidentally, some business inkjets have significantly cheaper consumables.HP offers no high-yield option for the M451dn's cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges, so if you print a lot of color pages, this is not the printer for you. The standard sizes cost $114 each and last for 2600 pages, working out to just under 4.4 cents per page per color. Next to other standard-size cartridges, these costs are a little cheaper than average, but compared with high-yield toners, they are far more expensive than average. The starter-size cartridges that ship with the printer last approximately 1400 pages. If you can hack the toner costs, the output of the M451dn is impressive and arrives quickly. Text is dark and sharp, and color photos are very good for a color laser at this price. Our full-page test photo showed a cool color palette and nice details. Text pages rendered at 11.4 pages per minute on the PC and 11.0 ppm on the Mac. Normal-size photos printed at 3.2 ppm to plain paper and 1.5 ppm on glossy paper. Full-page photos printed at about 0.8 ppm.Output quality and speed are the HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color Printer M451dn's strong suits. If you need the Wi-Fi connectivity that it lacks, its otherwise identical cousin, the M451dw, is only $50 more, at $550. However, if you print in any sort of volume, the ongoing costs for any model in the M451 product line will hurt you eventually--especially if you print lots of color. Alternatives in this price range include the and ; the latter's high-yield supplies are much less expensive than the M451dn's.HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color MFP: Cheap to Buy, Expensive to Own The HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw MFP seems to offer a lot for its low $450 (as of March 1, 2011) price: full capabilities (print/copy/fax/scan), wireless networking, Web apps, and . Small offices and businesses considering this printer, however, should also note what it lacks: speed and economy. It's one of the slowest models we've tested recently, and its toner is very pricey. In addition, it offers no automatic duplexing, which makes saving on paper costs harder. The has fewer bells and whistles by comparison, but it's noticeably faster. In our tests, the LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw was disappointingly slow. It has a habit of calibrating or initializing for minutes on end when all you want it to do is print. On plain black text, the easiest kind of printing, it worked at a sluggish rate of 7.4 pages per minute on the PC and 7.3 ppm on the Mac. Snapshot-size photos printed on letter-size paper averaged a subpar 1.7 ppm on the PC platform, while a full-page, high-resolution photo printed on the Mac took almost 80 seconds (0.8 ppm) to print. Scans and copies were similarly poky. The quality of the output offers some consolation. Text looks clean and precise. HP touts its ImageREt 3600 technology for images, and it seems to work--to an extent. Viewed from normal distance, the photos looked rich, though a bit dark. Upon closer inspection, fine horizontal banding spoiled some of the effect, and some of the contours in faces were hard to discern. Scanning was a mixed bag: Plain monochrome copies looked good, but a color copy seemed overly bright and somewhat uneven. Color scans from the Mac appeared richer than those from the PC, but on both platforms monochrome scans showed jagged lines and loss of fine detail. The construction of the CM1415fnw has a slightly flimsy feel, but as long as you keep the office trolls away from it, the unit should hold up. The mounting for the 150-sheet input tray seems insubstantial, but that's the only really worrisome physical detail we noticed. You get a 50-page automatic document feeder for the integrated flatbed A4-size scanner and a 125-sheet output tray. The lack of automatic duplexing (two-sided printing) is disappointing for an office-oriented machine. Wireless, ethernet, and USB connectivity are available. A plus is the 3.5-inch color LCD touchscreen control panel; the on-screen menu structure is intuitive and easy to navigate, though a bit overcrowded at times.Toner costs are the other big liability of this model. The $67 cyan, yellow, and magenta toner cartridges last for only 1300 pages apiece (5.2 cents per color), and the $70 black cartridge lasts for just 2000 pages. Do the math, and you'll discover that you're paying 3.5 cents per page for black, and nearly 19 cents total for a page with four colors. Buying the cartridges in pairs could alleviate the pain somewhat. It's hard to find perfection in this price range of color laser multifunctions. The HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw color MFP has some head-turning features, but the slow performance and expensive toner are tough to swallow.HP Launches Its First Ultrabook, the $900 HP Folio HP's first ultrabook, a 13.3-inch super-thin laptop dubbed the HP Folio, officially joined the ultrabook fray Wednesday, with more business-oriented features and a longer battery life than the competition so far.Like other , the HP Folio is all about being stylishly thin.According to , which leaked photos and specs of the ultrabook on Tuesday, the HP Folio is basically the ultraslim laptop on a diet: It's 0.71 inches thick, with a 3.28-pound weight. (The DM3, by comparison, weighs in at 4.2 pounds and measures 0.96 inches thick.)Although it's not the thinnest or lightest ultrabook announced to date, HP's press release on Wednesday reveals the company's hopes that the Folio will win over business users (and their IT departments) with options like a for email and hard drive protection and USB 2.0 dock. The HP Folio's 9 hours of battery life, the highest available among Ultrabooks to date, might also appeal to all types of mobile users, not just corporate jetsetters. For a competitive starting price of $900 (on par with the and the Ultrabooks), the HP Folio offers a Core i5-2467M processor, 4GB of memory, 126GB solid state drive, and an array of connectivity ports including Ethernet and USB 3.0. In typical HP fashion, the HP Folio will be configurable with other Intel processors and Windows 7 Professional instead of the starting configuration's Windows Home Premium. Will enterprises embrace the ultrabook concept and spring for HP's Ultrabook for their mobile professionals? That's still to be determined, but if you're interested in the Folio for yourself, you can pick one up from HP starting December 7.Follow (@melaniepinola) and on TwitterHP LP1965 HP's LP1965, the company's latest 19-inch monitor, performed well in our image quality tests. Jurors noted crisp lettering in a Microsoft Word document, and sharp, well-defined lines in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The display also rendered graphics well, with bright, realistic colors and skin tones in photographs and on a Web site. The attractive design includes a silver stand and a smooth black bezel. Making adjustments is a breeze--the LP1965 tilts, swivels, and pivots with ease; and it holds steady without any bobbling if the desk it's sitting on gets jostled.HP stores Pivot Pro software and the monitor's documentation on a single CD. The manual includes detailed descriptions of setup and installation, plus explanations of how to make on-screen adjustments. One appealing software extra is a program called Lite Saver, which allows you adopt power settings, should you wish to have the monitor switch off after a certain amount of time (minutes or hours) when it's not in use. And at $339 (as of January 12, 2007), the LP 1965 is reasonably priced. All in all, with its solid image quality and easy adjustability, the LP1965 should satisfy most users looking for a reliable, easy-to-use 19-inch display.Kalpana EttensonHP LP2275w When it comes to readable documents and vivid images, the HP LP2275w offers a solid, no-frills display that would make a good choice for users seeking a widescreen monitor that delivers the best of both worlds. At $350, it is priced slightly higher than other 22-inch displays, but its image quality would be worth the cost.During subjective evaluations at the PC World Test Center, the LP2275w showed sharp, easy-to-read text on our test screen of different-sized fonts. It also performed well in our color tests: When showing a photo of fruit, the monitor displayed bright, realistic colors. Some screens in our tests showed a rather high contrast, however. HP states that the display has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, but the contrast we saw seemed a bit extreme. In a few screens, the overblown contrast between the white background and objects in a portrait looked downright unrealistic. It almost looked as if the figures in the picture had been pasted in with Photoshop. That hiccup aside, the LP2275w is a nice display with a clean design. It offers smooth tilt and swivel adjustments, and can pivot as well. It omits an HDMI port, but does include VGA and DVI ports, as well as a DisplayPort. One upstream and four downstream USB ports are situated at the rear of the display. For undemanding users seeking a monitor on which to get basic tasks done, this 22-inch widescreen certainly should fit the bill.--Kalpana EttensonHP LP3065 HP's 30-inch LCD monitor, the LP3065, turned in impressive image quality in our tests. It also has a nice design and unique features that set it apart. Like other 30-inch displays, it's pricey, but it might be worth it if your work demands lots of screen real estate. The LP3065 performed well in our text and graphics tests, showing extremely sharp text in both a Microsoft Word document and an Excel spreadsheet. Black text on a white background was quite easy to read, even at very small font sizes. However, because of the display's high resolution of 2560 by 1600, icons and text can appear rather small. You can remedy this by increasing the font display size in Windows. Colors on the LP3065 looked bright and lively, both in photographs and on a screen of a Web site. Again, its high resolution helped the display excel at showing fine detail. With three DVI ports, the LP3065 is more versatile than other displays--it can be hooked up to several PCs at once using a digital connection, which is a nice extra. All of the ports are dual-link DVI, so they all require a dual-graphics card setup. If you don't already have such a graphics card, you'll have to shell out for one to accommodate this monitor. The LP3065 lacks an on-screen display (OSD) for adjusting the image--because no components yet exist that support its high resolution. HP states that future versions of the LP3065 will include an OSD. The only adjustment you can make is to brightness--several buttons on the front of the unit dial brightness up or down. The monitor has a nice streamlined design, with a thin black bezel and a silver stand. It can tilt and swivel, but not pivot. It's also height-adjustable and wall-mountable. But the LP3065 costs $1699, which is quite a bit for a display. Granted, you do get excellent image quality and lots of room to spread out in, and if you crave viewing detail in your photos and documents, the LP3065 might be worth the splurge. It delivers, but for a high initial price ($279 as of April 6, 2011), as well as high ongoing .Offering features that are tuned for simplicity and portability, the Officejet 100 is small and solidly constructed. It weighs 5.5 pounds including the battery, so carrying it is about the same as toting around an all-purpose laptop. If you know that you'll always have AC power available, you can shed about 6.4 ounces by leaving the battery behind. USB and Bluetooth connectivity are standard. The top cover folds back to create a 50-sheet rear vertical feed, but the printer has no output tray. Controls are minimal, limited to power, cancel, Bluetooth on/off, and paper feed.Speed is not the Officejet 100's forte. Printing black text and simple monochrome graphics at default settings, the unit averaged a lackluster 3.7 pages per minute on the PC and 3.6 ppm on the Mac. Printing small color photos on plain paper, it managed a competent rate of 2.7 ppm, but moving to nicer settings on photo paper slowed it considerably to 0.5 ppm. Our full-page photo printed on the Mac clearly pushed the OfficeJet 100 past its comfort zone, as it took a tortoiselike 5.5 minutes. An anecdotal switch to draft mode sped things up considerably: Text pages literally flew out the front. The impressive print quality makes up for the wait. Text was nearly laserlike in its precision, and monochrome graphics looked smooth. Color graphics printed on plain paper appeared slightly washed out and had a distinct bent toward pink and orange, most noticeable in flesh tones. Moving to HP's own photo paper resolved most of those issues.Ink costs are higher than average (though not the worst we've encountered), and a bit confusing. The standard-size HP 98 black cartridge costs $24 and lasts for 440 pages, or a pricey 5.5 cents per page. The HP 95 tricolor (cyan, magenta, yellow) costs $29 and lasts for about 330 pages, or 8.8 cents per page. A four-color page would cost 14.2 cents. You can reduce those costs to 4.8 cents per page (black), 7.1 cents per page (color), and 11.9 cents per page (four colors) with the 500-page, $24 HP 94 black cartridge and 560-page, $40 HP 97 tricolor. And no, that's not a typo: The company's Website lists the 98 and 94 cartridges for the same price. You may also replace the black cartridge with the HP 99 for six-color photo printing; the 99 costs $29 and lasts for 130 4-by-6-inch photos (about 22 cents per photo). The HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer fits the needs of the , providing competent printing capabilities in a luggable package. Although that comes at the sacrifice of speed, and at notable initial and ongoing costs, convenience is the priority with this machine.HP Officejet 150 Mobile All-in-One review: premium-priced portability The price ($400, per HP) of a ticket to the HP Officejet 150 Mobile All-in-One show is steep, and it gets steeper when you take ink costs into account. If you're willing to ante up, though, you get a unique, cleverly designed, easy-to-use that has Bluetooth connectivity for printing from mobile phones and devices. The unit's printing and scanning output are top-notch.The Officejet 150 Mobile connects via USB or Bluetooth. Perhaps there wasn't room, but we wish that it supported Wi-Fi for AirPrint, ad hoc networks, and the like. Setup is easy, and the scanning and Iris OCR software are competent. HP renders the print dialog area nicely, providing options for manual duplexing as well as multipage and booklet layouts. The Officejet 150 Mobile is approximately 14 inches wide by 7 inches deep by 3.5 inches tall, so you can fit it into larger luggage, but not into a briefcase or laptop bag. It's not particularly light, either, at 6.8 pounds with battery. The silvery top panel pops open and leans back to create the 50-sheet rear vertical paper feed, and to reveal the control panel and the scanner. The control panel, which tilts upward for use, includes a 2.36-inch touchscreen with a resistive design that requires slight pressure to issue commands. The scanner consists of a slot with a few markings around it.Describing an MFP's paper-handling features as fun may seem odd, but watching the Officejet 150 Mobile make a copy is a treat. To begin, you place the original face-down in the scanner feed. Press Copy on the touchscreen, and the original feeds up, sliding over the paper that the machine draws down from the rear feed to produce your copy. It's a very clever but limited design: the scanner takes only one sheet at a time, and printed pages exit from the front of the unit, with no output tray to catch them.Calling the Officejet 150 Mobile slow is putting it mildly, though you can get considerably faster performance (and lower quality) in draft mode when you need it. At the MFP's default settings, monochrome pages exit at 4.9 pages per minute on the PC and 4.6 ppm on the Mac. Snapshot-size, 4-by-6-inch photos print at 2.7 ppm on plain paper and 0.7 ppm on glossy stock. Full-page glossy photos crawl out at 0.2 ppm. Color copies exit at about 1 ppm. Given its sheet-fed design, the machine doesn't offer scan previews, but higher-resolution color scans take a very slow 70 seconds.Offsetting its slow performance is the Officejet 150 Mobile's excellent output quality. Text is sharp, clear, and black, and monochrome gradients are handled quite nicely. Color graphics look a tad washed out when printed on plain paper, but the high contrast ratio works well on glossy paper.Ink is somewhat pricey, but cartridge yields are generous. One compatible cartridge is the HP 98 black, which costs $26 and lasts for 440 pages, which works out to 5.9 cents per page. But the HP 94 black cartridge has the same price and delivers a yield of 500 pages (a rate of 5.2 cents per page). The two tricolor cartridge options are easier to differentiate: The HP 95 costs $32 for 330 pages (9.7 cents per page); and the HP 97 costs $44 for 560 pages (7.9 cents per page). The cost of printing a four-color page using the cheapest 94 and 97 ink cartridges is 13.1 cents--a little higher than the average. For even better photo quality, you can swap out the regular black cartridge for the HP 99 photo cartridge, which uses light cyan, light magenta, and photo black to create a richer palette. It costs $32 and lasts for about 130 photos, or 24.6 cents per photo. With the Officejet 150 Mobile All-in-One you get style, a clever design, and good output quality. It'll look cool when you set it down in front of a client, and it's the only truly portable printer/scanner on the market. But it costs $400, and the ink isn't cheap either. If you want a portable printer, but can do without the scanner and copier, check out the or the nearly identical Canon Pixma iP100 (which we've not reviewed).Editor's note: This review was corrected to reflect that the Officejet 150 Mobile All-in-One does not offer HP ePrint for sending print jobs remotely via e-mail. PCWorld regrets the error.HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-one Printer Review: Fast, Affordable Color The HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One (print/scan/copy/fax) offers many impressive capabilities, especially considering its affordable price of just $170 (as of March 28, 2012). Geared toward the needs of a midvolume home or small office (printing dozens, not hundreds, of pages per week), the Officejet 6700 Premium performs quickly and produces decent text and photos. Its inks, especially colors, are affordable in their high-yield versions. The OfficeJet 6700 Premium is a triple treat, interface-wise: USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi are all present. Setup is easy, and the software is the usual competent but easy-to-use HP suite, including optical character recognition. The control panel is a 2.65-inch touchscreen color LCD with additional touch controls to each side. The only nontouch control is the power button. A USB port on the OfficeJet 6700 Premium's front allows you to offload scans or perform direct printing.Highlights in paper handling include a roomy 250-sheet bottom-mounted paper tray (most of its competitors have 100- or 150-sheet trays) and a 75-sheet output tray, plus automatic duplexing. The flatbed scanner platen is your typical letter/A4-size offering, but the 35-sheet automatic document feeder above it can scan legal-size media and capture both sides of a two-sided document (one side at a time). Telescoping hinges for the scanner cover/ADF are the only things we missed. The OfficeJet 6700 Premium's speed is peppy for the price range: In our tests the OfficeJet 6700 Premium reached a medium-fast rate of 10 pages per minute printing plain text on the PC and Mac platforms, and it posted average or faster speeds printing photos and color graphics. Only its scanning was significantly more sluggish than average.Though the scans are slow, at least they look good: fairly accurate in color, not too choppy or dark. Print quality disappoints at default settings on plain paper, as text appears dark charcoal rather than black and slightly soft around the edges, while color images look orangey and fuzzy. Switching to a finer quality mode for text and photo paper for color improves matters considerably (and uses more ink). The draft mode is both faster and more readable than most. The Officejet 6700 Premium uses a four-cartridge ink system that's costlier than average with the standard-capacity supplies, but considerably cheaper than average with the high-capacity cartridges. The normal $20 black that lasts for 400 pages works out to a rather pricey 5 cents per page. The $11 cyan, magenta, and yellow last for 330 pages, or 3.3 cents per page. That's a slightly above-average 15 cents per four-color page. The high-yield cartridges include a 1000-page black for $32, or 3.2 cents per page, and 825?Cpage colors for $16 each, which works out to 1.9 cents per page. That makes for a far more affordable, 9-cent four-color page. Text pages still cost about twice what you??ll pay with fancier models such as the .Though the HP Officejet 6700 Premium falls a bit short in scanning capabilities and ink costs, it's otherwise a capable midpriced inkjet MFP. A similarly priced competitor, the , offers CD/DVD printing and a two-year warranty (compared to the HP's one), but it also has a lower paper capacity and some higher ink prices.HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer Review: Features and Speed Aplenty In a world filled with cheap but underpowered (MFPs), using the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is a pleasant departure. One of the most competent MFPs for the price ($300 as of 12/05/2011), it lacks nothing in its features, is solidly constructed, fully supports legal-size paper, is faster than everything else in its price range, and even offers dirt-cheap ink. There's not much more you could ask for. When it comes to paper handing, the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can do everything. It automatically duplexes printouts, and copies two-sided-to-two-sided as well. Legal-size paper is fully supported throughout the printer (as it is with all OfficeJet Pro models), including the scanner and the 50-sheet ADF. The 250-sheet paper tray is adequate for most small businesses and workgroups, as is the approximately 50-sheet output tray. If you need more tray capacity, you can step up to the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer, which has an additional 250-sheet input tray--for another $100.Setting up the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is a breeze with any of the three supported interfaces: USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi. The 4.3-inch LCD is great: It??s easy to enter passwords for wireless setups; the menus and settings are well-organized; and you get access to HP's numerous Web apps. For printing from smartphones and tablets, you get HP??s print-by-mail ePrint service, as well as direct printing from iOS and Android devices via HP applets. The contextually lit navigational controls (they remain dark until needed) that flank the LCD are less thrilling, as they require an unintuitive, annoyingly long touch before responding. The OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is one of the fastest inkjet MFPs we've tested, with speeds that range from 13.2 pages per minute (ppm) for text and mixed text with monochrome graphics, to 4.6 ppm for half-page photos on plain paper, and 2 ppm for half-page photos on glossy paper. For our most challenging print test, a high-resolution, full-page photo printed on glossy paper, the OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus managed a just-above-average rate of 0.56 ppm. Scans are quite quick as well. The Officejet Pro 8600 Plus's print quality for office basics is quite good: Text is crisp and dark, and simple graphics look quite good. On the other hand, photos look a bit yellowish and washed out on plain paper, though they are much better on HP's own photo paper. Copies, both monochrome and color, are good, although color scans lean toward the dark side.Ink costs for the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus are outstandingly low: The standard 1000-page black cartridge costs $27, or 2.7 cents per page (cpp), while the three standard color cartridges last for 700 pages at $20 each, or 2.9 cpp per color. That makes a four-color page approximately 11.4 cpp. The news gets better: The 2300-page, $37 XL black cartridge works out to only 1.6 cpp, and the 1500-page, $28 XL color cartridges come out to 1.9 cpp--making for a four-color page that costs a mere 7.3 cpp. If you do a lot of printing, this machine??s inks will save you money in the long run.The Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is merely one of best inkjet MFPs on the market. You might argue about the default plain paper photo output, but it's very fast, produces good printing overall, and is very cheap to operate. If you don??t need this model??s comprehensive legal-size support, the costs the same and has more paper capacity. On the other hand, it??s also a little slower, and its inks are not quite as inexpensive.HP Omni 200 Quad: Superspeedy, but Lacking Elsewhere If you're interested in speed--and speed alone--the 21.5-inch HP Omni 200 Quad may be the right pick for you in the category. You'll be cruising so quickly in programs and in Windows that you might not even notice the machine's shortcomings. This $960 (as of April 26, 2011) may be fast, but it's certainly not flawless. We'll start with the good news. Packing an Intel Core i5-760 processor that chugs along at 2.8GHz, the Omni 200 Quad zipped to the top of the chart. As for the rest of the meat and potatoes, 6GB of DDR3-677 memory and a 1TB hard drive accompany the CPU.The Omni 200 Quad blazed through our WorldBench 6 suite of tests to achieve a jaw-dropping score of 132--the highest mark the all-in-one class has seen, period. Another outlier for the category: decent gaming performance. On our Unreal Tournament 3 benchmark test, the Omni 200 Quad generated 47.9 frames per second (at 1680-by-1050-pixel resolution and highest settings). Since the PC's native resolution is 1920 by 1080 pixels, it fell out of the running for our higher, 1920-by-1200-pixel tests. Even so, its results are still an impressive showing for a category that generally fails to deliver in games.Of course, the raw performance of an all-in-one desktop is only half the equation--the screen is a big deal, too, as you can't exactly replace it. In the case of the Omni 200 Quad, three strikes work against it. First, it lacks a touchscreen. That might not mean much if you're not interested in jabbing at your screen, but the all-in-one category has largely migrated toward finger-friendliness. Second, the display's contrast and saturation tend toward the extremely bright end of the spectrum, almost evoking a blown-out or overworked coloration during normal use. And third, the center-weighted speakers sound great for music, but not so terrific if you're trying to listen to anything with dialogue (such as a movie trailer). Two USB ports and a multiformat card reader sit on one side of the Omni 200 Quad's 21.5-inch frame (it's actually larger, but we're referring to screen size here), while a DVD burner occupies the other side. On the system's rear is a depressingly small set of connections consisting of just five USB ports and a gigabit ethernet port--a fairly limited array for the kinds of devices you would want to plug into an all-in-one. The computer does include Wireless-N networking, but that's pretty much standard today. We were surprised to see that the Omni 200 Quad's memory, hard drive, and optical drive are indeed upgradable. The quick-start guide we received with the system didn't point out the specifics of doing so, but downloadable instructions from HP's Website do provide details. Also packed with our review unit were a wireless keyboard and mouse. Both are generic in that they have no extra buttons, but we can't complain about the wireless aspect--nicely done.In creating the Omni 200 Quad, HP has taken the lackluster all-in-one and updated a few of its features (for a few hundred more dollars). Our core concerns remain pretty strong, however. We're not sold on the Omni 200 Quad's picture or sound quality--neither is horrible, but neither is delightful. Although the system's speeds and storage capacity are excellent, its available connections are lackluster. In the end, this system might whiz along like a roadrunner, but what can you really do with it?HP Omni 220 Quad Review: Fast, Affordable, Homely HP's Omni line is known for its speediness--the is one of the quickest budget all-in-one PCs we've tested--and the HP Omni 220 Quad, which starts at $1000 (as of March 14, 2012), is no different. Actually, it is different: It's even faster than the Omni 200.Awesome, right? Well, not everything about the Omni 220 is stellar, but maybe you can overlook its flaws because it's such a good performer. Our review model came packed with an Intel Core i7-2600S processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. It also features an AMD Radeon HD 6450 discrete graphics card, built-in Wireless-N networking, and Beats Audio enhancement technology. The system runs the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. No question about it--the Omni 220 is fast. We're talking definite nonbudget speeds: In PCWorld's WorldBench 6 benchmark tests, the Omni 220 earned an impressive score of 147. By contrast, its predecessor, the Omni 200, posted a mark of 132, and even that's speedy.Graphics performance is also good, especially for the all-in-one category. In our Dirt 2 tests the Omni 220 managed a decent frame rate of 40 frames per second (at 1680-by-1050-pixel resolution and highest settings). Cranked up to 1920 by 1200 pixels, it fell short with a frame rate of just 25 fps. If you're shopping for a gaming machine, you may want to look elsewhere.Performance stats aside, the Omni 220 is a lot like the Omni 200. Both feature the same cantilever design, which isn't terribly attractive or ugly--it just is. Both sport a 21.5-inch display with a native resolution of 1680 by 1080 pixels (full HD). And both have speakers that work well for music but not for anything else. For what it's worth, the included Beats Audio software enhances the speaker output considerably (the speakers sound thin and bassless without Beats Audio turned on). That said, the result is not very loud, and audio sounds fuzzy at the highest volume setting. The Omni 220's screen lacks touch support, and its off-axis viewing angles are pretty dismal. It's also a tad too bright. Usually I'm all for superbright screens, but in this case the colors look washed out. On a positive note, the matte screen produces little glare. The brightness and the lack of glare are great news if you plan on using this PC in bright light or direct sunlight, but since it's an all-in-one and not a laptop, that probably won't be an issue. On the back of the system, you'll find most of the ports: four USB 2.0 connections, gigabit ethernet, audio-out, and a Kensington lock. A few convenience items--two USB 3.0 ports, separate headphone and microphone jacks, and a multiformat card reader--are on the left side of the screen. The right side of the screen houses the tray-loading .Accompanying the Omni 220 are a wired mouse and keyboard, both of which are mediocre. The keyboard is flat, with regular keys, and it's a little stiff for typing. It does have volume control buttons, as well as a red Beats Audio key for turning the Beats Audio speaker enhancement on and off. The optical mouse is a typical two-buttons-with-a-scrollwheel affair. It's light and responsive--a plus, since you have no touchscreen to fall back on.The HP Omni 220 Quad is faster than its predecessor, and it packs a Blu-ray disc player--we think that's great. The display is a bit less impressive, but if you're looking for a Blu-ray player and an that offers great general performance, it's not a bad choice.HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition: Great Sound and Style at a Reasonable Price The HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition does a lot for a little. The moderately priced laptop boasts sturdy, striking design, powerful speakers, a generous allotment of external ports, good battery life, and an Intel Core i5 processor. It's not perfect in every way, but it's a solid laptop for the busy audiophile on a budget, with an eye for the urbane. The Beats brand is endorsed by rapper and hip-hop producer Dr. Dre. So it should come as no surprise that style and high-quality sound components come standard. The aesthetic appeal of the slim profile and matte-black, brushed-aluminum case of our 14-inch review model can't be denied. The dm4, which starts at $900 and peaks out at around $2000 fully loaded, looks and feels great. Typing on the backlit red-on-black keys is a breeze. An inch thick, this 4.5-pound all-purpose laptop slips neatly into any work-sized bag without weighing you down.Despite its compact frame, the dm4 packs a punch and goes toe-to-toe with the specs of many laptops in its class. It has a generous allotment of three USB ports (one 2.0 and two ), as well as two display ports (VGA and HDMI), an SD/MMC memory card input, and an ethernet port. Beneath its pretty shell, our entry-level test unit boasts 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, WLAN, Bluetooth, an Intel Core i5-2430M processor, 6GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and Intel integrated graphics.Of the most recent all-purpose laptops reviewed by PCWorld, the Pavilion dm4's battery outlasted all but one ?? the , which held a charge for 6 hours, 41 minutes in our lab, more than an hour longer than the dm4's 5 hours, 23 minutes. The dm4 Beats Edition bested the , Lenovo , and with a moderate WorldBench 6 score of 120. The Asus U46SV earned a slightly higher WorldBench 6 score of 123.While the Beats series of headphones are often derided by audio enthusiasts as being of middling quality while posing as high-end (I'm not disputing it), one of this laptop's clearest strengths is the built-in speakers. Aided by the Beats Audio control interface ?? which is different from the much simpler Windows sound panel ?? the dm4 Beats Edition really kicks. It can get loud without sounding overdriven, and the Beats Audio control panel is a big improvement over the Windows sound controls (with a nine-band graphic equalizer and special built-in microphone filters). What would a laptop endorsed by a rap legend be without bass? The lower frequencies really hold up coming from the on-board stereo speakers with subwoofer. It's just a shame that HP decided to position the speakers on the underside of the front of the device. That placement only serves to ensure that you will muffle your tunes when listening with the dm4 on your lap, especially in bed, a"

Visions of wide open kitchens with multiple islands dance in our heads, but in reality we are remodeling our own small, perfectly imperfect kitchens. However, did you know that some professional cooks actually prefer small kitchens to large kitchens? When I , host of the PBS series "Christina Cooks" and author of several popular cookbooks, she told me that inefficient, large kitchens are all too common, and that she prefers to cook in a kitchen in which the "work triangle" (the sink, stove, and work station) are close together. Does that make you feel better about having a small kitchen? It should! The key to getting the most out of a small kitchen, and what to keep in mind when remodeling, is maximizing the efficiency of your work triangle. A common motivation for people to remodel their small kitchens is a lack of counter space, also known as too small of a work station. Creating storage for small appliances under the counters is one way to increase counter space, as is installing wall ovens. Another way to increase counter space in a small kitchen is to install an undermount sink. Since undermount sinks eliminate few inches that the "lip" of a sink take up, you can gain several inches of counter space by installing an undermount sink. Another way to gain counter space is to move the sink from the center of the counter to the edge. When it comes to installing an oven in a small kitchen remodel, consider splitting up the oven and cook top. A wall oven and separate cook top can make room for additional under-counter storage space. If you choose to go with a regular range and oven, use the idea of the work triangle as your guide to where to position it. If you cannot move your sink due to the cost of moving , it is less costly to move the oven and the work station. Arranging your kitchen so that the refrigerator is next to the work station, which is next to a sink, with is next to a small counter top, which is next to the oven is one way to get the most out of a small kitchen remodel.Using vertical space, from ceiling to floor, is another way to maximize the functionality of a small kitchen. When remodeling a small kitchen, consider space that you otherwise had not considered for purposes that you had never imagined it could accommodate. Wine refrigerator under the counter? Why not? Shelves that reach the ceiling with a rolling ladder to reach them? Sure! Knocking down part of a wall to build a breakfast bar and to let light in? Of course! When you're remodeling a small kitchen, think vertical when it comes to storage. For photos of great small kitchen remodels and to ask all your small kitchen remodeling questions, click over to .Chaya Kurtz writes for Networx.com. .Provided by "Trash to treasure" is one of those phrases which motivates DIY furniture builders. What could be more exciting than transforming found junk into something truly beautiful and functional? There are so many materials to choose from when it comes to upcycling. Almost anything is fair game, but wood is a favorite. Sources of reclaimed wood include parts of old furniture, plywood signs, shipping pallets, and even salvaged floor boards or wall boards. Don't forget old doors! They make excellent table tops and desk tops. Wooden crates are an excellent furniture building material, and so are scraps of 2 by 4's that you might have hanging around the basement.Do you need to be a to build with reclaimed wood? It helps to have some carpentry skills, but this type of project can be great for beginners. Why? If you mess up, it's not like you ruined expensive new wood! That's part of why some of the best and most creative furniture-building projects have been done with found wood. Found wood just invites creativity. This DIY bench is so cool! It was made by , which is incidentally a cute name and a great blog on DIY furniture building. What's it made of? The wide wood boards are actually an old bed. After building the bench, she stained, painted, and sanded it down to its lovely weathered finish. The is also a DIY project that you could do.These street signs have so much potential! Smart builder Howard Bales used some old fashioned joinery skills when from old plywood street signs. This table is actually a computer desk. Can't you envision it in an industrial-chic office setting? While the road signs could be stripped, sanded, and painted over, there is something really exciting about seeing the original use for the boards, repurposed as a work station. What else could you think of to build with old road signs?Wooden wine crates are a classic DIY building material. I'm always scanning the local Craigslist listings for free building materials, and I have seen fancy restaurants actually selling their used wine crates to , who like to collect them for projects. Selling the crates might just be a New York City thing (is there anything here that does not somehow involve profit?), so check with your local wineries and bars to find out if they have any wine crates to give away. Even if they're selling them, rather than just giving them, wine crates are still a great material to repurpose. Like, look at this fabulous boutique hotel reception desk! I could see building a out of wine crates, or a crafts table.Related: +++Networx.com and Hometalk.com help folks to do the best and smartest home improvement and gardening projects. .This article was originally distributed via PRWeb. Here are my gripes with the current standings:1. LSU2. Oklahoma State3. Alabama4. Stanford5. Boise State6. Oklahoma*Obviously LSU is where it needs to be. OSU is as well. Bama at #3 is wrong, in my opinion. Common sense tells me that a team with one loss is not as good as a team with zero losses. Granted, the one loss by Bama is to the top team, but they still lost. Stanford and Boise State haven't. I'd put Bama at #5 behind Stanford #3 and Boise State #4. *To me, the Sooners are going to have a hard time getting any higher. The only way OU gets to the national title game now is by winning in Bedlam and hoping that Oregon beats Stanford. Even then, the Sooners' one loss came to a crappy Texas Tech team. Bama's only loss (assuming they finish unbeaten) is to #1. Boise will not have lost. I can't put OU ahead of Boise, Bama or Oregon because of that loss to the Red Raiders. Beating #2, to me, doesn't outweigh Bama and Oregon losing to #1 and Boise going unbeaten. *My WHOLE ARGUMENT from the beginning of this BCS thing is this: how do you know if this is a true champion? I hate the way the BCS is decided by computers and dudes in their mom's basement watch games through his thick, black-rimmed specs that are only held together by masking tape. Those number crunchers, accurate as they may SEEM, will never be as decisive as a college football playoff. SAY Bama beats LSU in the BCS title game. All that says to me is both teams are 1-1 against each other. Yet, Bama takes home the trophy because they won last. That isn't a fair representation of the true BCS champion. If Bama and LSU had to go through a month-long postseason gauntlet, and then played in the title game against each other, I'd be able to crown Bama a champ if they won that game BECAUSE THEY EARNED IT through a playoff. There have been plenty of times in the NFL that the team that won the Super Bowl lost to its SB opponent in the regular season. They had to FIGHT for that berth in the title game. That's the difference. Don't just gift Bama a spot in the championship game because they are "the best team outside of LSU" by popular opinion. The court of public appeal means nothing. It's about wins and losses. Another gripe I have.. rewards for easy scheduling. The perfect example is Houston. If Tulsa and Houston swap schedules this year, would TU be ranked #11 in the BCS, like the Cougars are now? Is that fair? Who have they played? Let's see:HOUSTONUCLA (5-4), North Texas (3-6), Louisiana Tech (5-4) and Georgia State (2-7) Combined overall record of opponents: 15-21TULSAOklahoma (8-1), Oklahoma State (9-0), Boise State (8-0), North Texas (3-6)Combined record of opponents: 28-7The only common opponent is North Texas. Houston beat them, 48-23. Tulsa won, 41-24. Throw that game out because the results were basically the same. Tulsa is essentially punished for playing difficult games. Houston is rewarded for playing cupcake teams. Is that fair? If I had a vote, the BCS might look a little bit different.By Steven ReinbergHealthDay ReporterMONDAY, Aug. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Teens of a parent who smoked -- even if the mother or father quit before the teen was born -- are more likely to smoke than those whose parents are nonsmokers, a new study finds.Having an older brother or sister who smokes also raises the odds that a teen will pick up the habit, the researchers report."These findings imply that any amount of smoking could have important influences on the next generation," said lead researcher Mike Vuolo, an assistant professor of sociology at Purdue University. "Given the influence on the oldest siblings, this is especially the case in heavy-smoking households."Vuolo and co-author Jeremy Staff, an associate professor of sociology at Pennsylvania State University, analyzed data from a multigenerational study that has followed participants since 1988, when they were freshmen in high school, to 2011. They focused on 214 now-parents and 314 of their children aged 11 and older.Annual survey results uncovered four patterns of smoking: teens who were persistent heavy smokers, teens who were light smokers who quit or reduced use, teens who started smoking later and nonsmokers. Their children were then surveyed in 2011."Surprisingly, we found similar odds of smoking among the children for the three smoking groups [23 percent to 29 percent] compared with children of nonsmokers [8 percent]," Vuolo said.In homes with a persistent heavy-smoking parent, the oldest sibling is influenced to smoke, which in turn increases the chances that younger siblings will smoke by six times, he added."We should educate young people that smoking at any time in their lives could have influences on their children. Also, preventative efforts should target heavy-smoking households, trying to break the cycle of influence on the oldest siblings," Vuolo said. The report was published online Aug. 5 and in the September print issue of Pediatrics.Dr. John Spangler, a professor of family and community medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, said there may well be a genetic component to these findings."This study confirms what we have already sensed, that there is a family history of tobacco use among many smokers," Spangler said. "We know that people are more likely to uses substances like alcohol based on family history, the same holds true for tobacco use."This may point to a genetic predisposition to metabolize nicotine or dopamine differently, he said. "We should encourage doctors to ask about a family history of smoking, because if there is a family history of smoking then that individual is more likely to be a smoker in the future," Spangler said.Parents who were former smokers should realize their child is more likely to become a smoker. These parents may want to discuss smoking with their children with an eye toward preventing it. "This may also be a good way for physicians to counsel parents about and children about tobacco use -- that there is this risk factor," Spangler said. Another expert agreed that parents who smoke should make every effort to quit, but said that further measures are needed."Consistent with previous research, this study shows the dramatic impact of parental smoking on youth smoking," said Danny McGoldrick, vice president for research at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids."Even parents who are unable to quit should make their cars and homes smoke-free, send clear messages to their children about not smoking and support policies and programs like increased tobacco taxes, smoke-free laws and comprehensive prevention and cessation programs that are proven to reduce smoking among kids and adults," he said. While the study showed an association between having parents or siblings who smoke and smoking yourself, it did not prove a cause-and-effect link.Another study in the same journal issue found that 72 percent of teens who use smokeless tobacco products also smoke cigarettes. This finding runs counter to the idea that smokeless tobacco products can help reduce the health problems associated with tobacco use, the researchers said.Kids who used smokeless tobacco were more likely to believe that it's less harmful than tobacco products in general, the study found.More informationFor facts about smoking cessation, visit the . Litigation takes a long time in this country, especially when you're talking about completely unprecedented claims arising from unique, unforeseeable circumstances. It's just about unfathomable that the United States will fail to meet its obligations to bondholders for as long as it would take them to obtain a judgment, even assuming that bondholders somehow defied all reasonable expectations and managed to win their case. For that hypothetical to be realized, our economy would have to be so devastated that bondholder litigation would be a relatively small worry. But what about a suit by foreigners who own U.S. debt? Or even foreign sovereigns? I talked Wednesday with several foreign debt and constitutional experts, both in academia and private practice. They outlined a set of hypotheticals under which foreign owners of U.S. debt could sue the U.S. government in their own courts and even attempt to enforce judgment against the United States by seizing U.S. assets. Granted, the scenario is based on speculation that's incredibly unlikely to come to pass. In these strange days, though, a little mind-bending is good exercise. The first thing to know is that T-bills and U.S. bonds don't come with complicated purchase agreements. U.S. debt is sold under the full faith and credit of the government as a simple obligation to pay. That's different from, say, the Argentine bonds that have occasioned so much litigation in federal district court in Manhattan and at the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. Argentina agreed in its bond offerings to submit to the jurisdiction of U.S. courts, which have acted as the interpreters of Argentina's contracts with bondholders. T-bills and U.S. bonds do not specify any jurisdiction to oversee disputes in the event of default. The instruments don't even contemplate the possibility of default, which is just another indication of the dilemma we're in right now.If the U.S. government misses a payment, American debt holders who wanted to litigate would presumably sue in either U.S. district court or the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, which oversees (among other things) disputes between the federal government and U.S. contractors. Jurisdiction would be a threshold question of first impression, in which the courts would have to determine whether there's a contract between the government and debt holders.Once that was decided, the United States would argue that it's immune, as a sovereign, from bondholder claims. Law professor David Skeel of the University of Pennsylvania told me by email that U.S. debt instruments do not waive sovereign immunity, "so it would be tough to sue." Professor Neil Buchanan of the George Washington University Law School said bondholders could surely "get through the courthouse door," but he said federal judges would probably dismiss their suits under the Political Question Doctrine, which holds that courts should not oversee cases that interfere with the decision-making authority of elected officials.Even if debt owners survived sovereign immunity and Political Question defenses and won a judgment against the government, how would they enforce it? Courts aren't going to permit them to seize government assets, after all. As I said above, given the years of litigation American bondholders would have to endure and their infinitesimal odds of recovering anything from the courts, it's just about impossible to imagine that they'd be made whole through litigation faster than they would be without suing. Never say never: Anyone with the cash to pay a filing fee can bring a lawsuit in federal court, and suing to recover a missed payment can make a public relations point. Just don't expect more than a headline from the filing. So why could the scenario be different for foreign debtholders? Because they can argue that their courts, and not U.S. courts, have jurisdiction over their claims. Remember, when you buy U.S. debt, there's no contract provision specifying where disputes will be heard. That means there's nothing to stop foreign citizens - or even foreign governments - from attempting to use their own court system to redress the U.S. government's failure to make good on debt payments. Of course, such a suit would be subject to that country's version of the U.S.'s Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which could preclude the litigation. There are also diplomatic and economic considerations for foreigners holding U.S. debt. A foreign sovereign like China would have to think very hard about the market and foreign relations impact of suing the United States over a default. On the other hand, a foreign sovereign could point to the long-running Argentina bond litigation in U.S. courts to argue that if American judges can decide how Argentina must meet its obligations to bondholders, then their courts can decide the U.S. government's obligations. (I should point out here that the Justice Department actually sided with Argentina on the interpretation of the equal-footing clause in its bond contracts. Also, unlike Argentina, the U.S. has never agreed to subject its agreements with debt holders to the jurisdiction of a foreign court.) If a foreign court were to claim jurisdiction and issue a judgment against the U.S. government, it's probably more likely that foreign debt holders would actually be able to recover, via the seizure of U.S. assets abroad, than U.S. bondholders would be able to attempt to take control of government property within our borders.Of course, that's still an almost-impossible chain of events. Bondholder litigation against the United States is the longest of long shots, no matter where you're suing. "It's fun to speculate, but it's hard to imagine that a lawsuit against the U.S. would be the most effective remedy or the fastest route to recovery in the U.S. or abroad," said emerging-markets debt expert Bruce Wolfson of Bingham McCutchen. "Any suit like that would be more for political theater."Let's hope we never get past the initial assumptions in my worst-case litigation hypothetical, namely that the United States will hit the debt ceiling and breach debt obligations. I'm just making a small contribution to the literature of looming default catastrophe, in case certain members of the executive or legislative branches need a bit of extra persuasion.(Reporting by Alison Frankel)"This is going to be one of the craziest years I've seen," said Mark Steber, chief tax officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services. "It's kind of the perfect tax storm."For those of us still smarting from the 2011 tax comeuppance, 2012 is nothing to look forward to.A host of tax deductions are set to expire by Dec. 31. Together they add up to many billions of dollars in breaks for taxpayers.Of course, 2012 is also an election year. So fixing any of that before mid-November is not even getting serious discussion. That will leave only a month or so for the new Congress to do its typical patching and extending of various breaks. Whether they'll be able to agree on such moves at all will have a lot to do with the Nov. 6 election results. Some of the writeoffs scheduled to expire or drop significantly in value in 2012 include:A full list from Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation is available .Of these breaks, the biggest dollar value belongs to the Bush tax cuts and the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) patch. The confluence of these two expiring in the same year is?a big part of Steber's 2012 "perfect storm."The Bush tax cuts have come up for renewal every two years. The AMT has been patched 18 times since it was?created in 1969.Without a renewal of the AMT patch, another 34? million Americans would become subject to it, according to the Congressional Research Service (CRS).The 2-year AMT patch for 2010 and 2011 cost an estimated $136.7 billion, according to .A permanent fix would be hugely expensive. Paired with an extension of the 2001/2003 tax cuts first enacted under the Bush administration, and renewed by President Barack Obama in 2008,? a permanent AMT fix would cost something on the order of $2.7 trillion over the 2011-2022 period, according to that CRS report. That difference in magnitude explains why the AMT gets patched every few years, rather than overhauled.Unlike other tax changes, which can sometimes be more challenging to detect, the AMT?has a?readily apparent impact on?the voting public, since it becomes clear when we prepare our taxes, Steber notes. If these issues are not fixed in the last weeks of 2012, there will be a sharp political backlash, Steber predicts."You are going to pay more tax. Your refund is going to go down. Elected officials don't want that," he said. "People will vote on that."With the high likelihood of tax changes at the very end of the year, there will be very little time for the IRS to implement them. Tax forms?already will?be printed and?software designed.IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman has voiced concern.? "You could have a real disaster in the filing season where there's total confusion," especially for the alternative minimum tax patch, he an audience at the National Press Club on April 5.Information contained on this page is provided by an independent third-party content provider. All Rights Reserved.NEW YORK (AP) - While the iPhone 5S includes a handful of new features that set it apart from Apple's previous model, the actual cost to make the phone hasn't changed very much, according to a new study. An IHS Inc. teardown of the new smartphone found that the components that make up a 16-gigabyte iPhone 5S cost $190.70. Manufacturing costs add another $8, bringing the total production cost to $198.70. In comparison, the iPhone 5, which hit the market a year ago, cost $197 to make. Andrew Rassweiler, IHS' senior director for cost benchmarking services, noted that the 5S includes features new to the smartphone world, such as a 64-bit apps processor and a fingerprint identification sensor, without a significant jump in costs. The research firm also dissected a 16-gigabyte iPhone 5C, a cheaper version of the 5S, and put its total production cost at $173.45, including $7 in manufacturing costs. Rassweiler said the 5C is basically an iPhone 5 wrapped in plastic, noting that it has basically the same features, but benefits from typical component price drops, along with its cheaper plastic enclosure. The 5C has a starting sticker price of $549, but will sell for $99 with a two-year wireless contract. It's Apple's least-expensive iPhone ever and is an effort to boost sales in China and other areas where people don't have as much money to spend on new gadgets as they do in the U.S. and Europe. But critics have said that the phone is still too expensive to sell well in emerging markets. IHS said that while it costs substantially less to produce an iPhone 5C than it did an iPhone 5, those costs are still on the high side. It added that in order to merit the low-end smartphone pricing of $400 that many industry observers had expected, while maintaining typical Apple profit margins, the company would need to reduce its 5C production costs to about $130. Monday Apple reported that it sold 9 million of the two new models since their launch on Friday - its strongest iPhone launch ever - and that demand was exceeding supply. In midday trading, shares of the Cupertino, Calif., company slipped $5.98 to $483.12. Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Also taking into consideration their standard safety equipment, they've been named among the list of IIHS Top Safety Picks. The Azera, which went on sale earlier this year -- and is quite highly rated here at The Car Connection, especially due to its standout design and luxurious, full-featured interior -- already has an impressive set of standard safety features. There are a total of nine standard airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and rear side-impact bags, and the front seat design is one that's impact-reducing in itself. Also, the Azera includes a rearview camera system in each of its trims. And in new IIHS tests, it completely swept the ratings matrix, with top 'good' scores in all the subcategories of frontal and side-impact testing. The new Malibu Eco almost swept the board, with top ratings in all of the IIHS's subcategories; the sole exception was an 'acceptable' score for driver torso injury. In the relatively new roof strength test -- a measure that correlates to the likelihood of injury in a rollover accident -- the Malibu Eco was able to withstand 5.22 times its body weight in a particular test area of the roof.Withstanding 4.76 times its weight, the Azera also earned a 'good' rating. In any case, that was a substantial improvement over the previous (2011) Azera, which had earned 'acceptable' ratings for rear and side impact. The Malibu, on the other hand, has been a top performer for several model years. Although we should caution that these results don't extend to the rest of the (non-Eco) 2013 Chevy Malibu lineup, which hasn't yet gone on sale.Neither of these models has yet been rated by the federal government, as part of its new-car assessment program (NCAP) crash tests, but we'll update our review pages as soon as they're available. In the meantime, if safety is one of your top priorities, both of these roomy deserve to be on your shopping list. And go here to see the .This story originally appeared atBy MALIN RISINGAssociated Press STOCKHOLM (AP) - Swedish flat-pack furniture giant IKEA will start selling residential solar panels at its stores in Britain, the first step in its plan to bring renewable energy to the mainstream market worldwide. The company started selling solar panels made by China's Hanergy in its store in Southampton on Monday. It will sell them in the rest of Britain in coming months, it said. A standard, all-black 3.36 kilowatt system for a semi-detached home will cost 5,700 British pounds ($9,200) and will include an in-store consultation and design service as well as installation, maintenance and energy monitoring service. "In the past few years the prices on solar panels have dropped, so it's a really good price now," IKEA Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard told The Associated Press. "It's the right time to go for the consumers." The solar panel investment will be paid off in about seven years for an average home owner in Britain, Howard said. "If you are going to be in your house that long, your energy will be free after seven years," he said. Some retailers in the U.S., including the Home Depot and Lowe's, already sell solar panels. But in other parts of the world, consumers often have to research a myriad specialist firms before making a purchase. Howard said IKEA aims to launch the products in other countries eventually. It picked Britain as its test market because it has the right combination of mid-level electricity prices and government-sponsored financial incentives that make investing in solar energy attractive to consumers. "This is a market by market decision," he said. The U.K. government offers private solar panel owners the opportunity to sell back electricity to the grid on days when they have surplus production and has a financing plan for solar power investments, which means residents can buy a system for no upfront cost and pay it off gradually. I've lived a somewhat sheltered life with no problems, no troubles and no hint of felony or distraction to speak of. Not so much as an overdue library book. That's why this TCU story has me so baffled. Why in the world are four top athletes at a Christian university ? It's unbelievable to me. I have never done drugs. I've never SEEN drugs. I don't know what marijuana smells like. I don't know where to find cocaine. I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between ecstasy pills and aspirin if they were sitting side by side on a table in front of me. I like it that way, by the way. But I know that there is obviously a calling for these drugs out there or they wouldn't be such a big part of our social makeup. They are in movies and featured in music all the time. Needlessly, really. They are also the undoing of many star athletes. That's what has happened at TCU. The Horned Frogs lose four players because of a very serious run-in with undercover police. It's senseless and, more than that, stupid. Why would these 20-something year old kids throw their futures away like that knowing what is at stake? Is getting a quick high really that big of a deal? Maybe I'm wrong in assuming that they all TOOK the drugs. They were for sure selling them (and find me a baker that doesn't like cake). I'd imagine that the dealers are also the users much of the time. I understand the need for money. I was a poor college student once. I got a part time job. I didn't SELL illicit drugs. You say, well these players can't go out and get a job so they have to make money somehow. Shame on you if that thought popped in your head. STOP making excuses for them and STOP supporting dismissal of the law. These kids have thrown away the greatest opportunity in the world: FREE education. I have seen on Twitter today and a few other rumors hinting that upwards of 82 TCU players are involved in this. 82 out of 100?! I hope that's not true. Some of the comments on our story about this bother me. Saying that these kids are ready for a pro football career now because ALL pro football players are thugs/crooks/druggies/losers/criminals? How ignorant! Don't make the mistake of painting the entire team, or athletes in general, with one broad swipe of the brush. It's unfair. MAYBE all 100 players on the team were involved. Most likely that's untrue. It's most likely a couple of DUMB kids making HORRIBLE choices that ultimately cost them the right to play football at TCU. That doesn't mean that those four bad apples spoil the whole bunch. Drugs are useless and we all know that. The problem is getting young people like those four players to understand that what they thought they were getting away with hurts more people than just themselves. They have trashed their future and put their university in a tough spot. Very selfish, I think.U.S. District Judge?Otis Wright's May 6??in Ingenuity 13 v. John Doe is one of those decisions every lawyer should read. It's only six pages long and sprinkled with Star Trek references, but its value lies in the cautionary tale outlined by the San Francisco judge. Wright was presiding over one of the many, many cases filed in the last few years by copyright owners suing tens of thousands of defendants over the supposedly illegal downloading of their content via online file-sharing sites. The litigation, as you probably know, is a specialty of pornography producers, whose cases benefit significantly from defendants' understandable reluctance to be outed (even falsely) as consumers of online pornography. Occasionally defendants or their Internet service providers have?. More often, defendants identified through subpoenas of their ISPs chip up a few thousand bucks to make the whole nightmare go away, leading public interest groups such as Public Citizen and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to call these en masse illegal downloading cases a?.Wright is one of the first judges to agree wholeheartedly with that assessment and issue sanctions based on it. "Plaintiffs have outmaneuvered the legal system. They've discovered the nexus of antiquated copyright laws, paralyzing social stigma, and unaffordable defense costs," he wrote. "Copyright laws originally designed to compensate starving artists allow starving attorneys in this electronic-media era to plunder the citizenry." The judge went considerably further than mere rhetoric, though. In the course of hearing discovery motions by the plaintiff, a copyright holding company called Ingenuity 13, the judge found out a bit about Ingenuity's counsel, a??known as?Prenda Law. When Wright's preliminary inquiries about Prenda revealed what he called a "cloak of shell companies and fraud," the judge "went to battle stations," he said in his opinion. He ordered four lawyers associated with Prenda (but not in the Ingenuity case) and two purported principals in holding companies engaged in the business of asserting porn copyrights to appear at a series of hearings in March and April.Based on testimony and filings, Wright said, he concluded that the lawyers?John Steele, Paul Hansmeier?andPaul Duffy, who had all previously experienced "shattered law practices," began copyright trolling as a way to make "easy money."
