Indian mobile numbers growing, but painfully slow

Bangalore, September 18, 2013: The latest numbers released by the  Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), representing GSM operators in India  put their total  subscriber base  as of September, at 674.4 million,  a small increase of 1.78 million in the month of August.  

The number 1  operator  by numbers, Bharti Airtel,  with a 28.5 % share of the market added  some 834,000 subscribers but the maximum additions came to Aircel with 876,883 new subscribers. The number  2 player Vodafone, actually lost some 85,000 subscribers.

After many months of declining numbers, the India cellular business  si slowly inching up although the monthly  additions are almost a tenth of what they used to be just 2 years ago. 

The COAI numbers exclude the CDMA side of the business
