New storage options for India: SSD for notebooks; hard drive for enterprise

New storage options have been announced for India:  up to 64 GB in solid state  drives for netbooks and small sized computing devices; and  a 1 TB enterprise hard drive in 2.5 inch format....

Storage and multimedia products leader Transcend Information has launched new small footprint SSDs and low-profile mSATA SSD drives for applications where a small form factor is desired, such as thin and light notebooks, net books, tablets, GPS, and mobile internet devices (MID). Transcend’s mSATA SSDs leverage the speed and reliability of the SATA interface, yet offer a smaller form factor than 2.5” SSDs—only one twelfth the volume and one seventh the weight. The mSATA SSDs measure 29.85 mm x 50.8 mm x 3.5 mm, and adhere to the MO-300A JEDEC standard for small form-factor SSDs. The mSATA costs 32GB: Rs.5610 and the 64GB: Rs.10340
Transcend’s half-slim SSD modules are in bigger form factors, 54 mm x 39 mm x 4 mm, but still much smaller than 2.5” SSDs—only one eighth the volume. Transcend’s mSATA SSDs are offered in 32GB and 64GB capacities, while the half-slim SATA SSDs are available in capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB. Prices in India: 4GB: Rs.1810; 8GB: Rs.1950; 16GB: Rs.3000; 32GB: Rs.5500;64GB: Rs.10340
Gordon Wu, Regional Head - South Asia, Transcend says , “Our two new SSD modules offer great design flexibility and are cost savings as compared to other SSDs which typically use the larger 2.5” form factor. Despite their compact size, the mSATA and half-slim SSDs feature a high-bandwidth SATA 3GB/s interface that helps to bring the performance advantages of SSDs to notebooks, mobile devices and other embedded storage applications”

1TB Enterprise hartd drive from Seagate
Seagate has introduced Constellation.2, the industry’s first 2.5-inch enterprise-class hard drive to reach a record 1TB capacity
. The Constellation.2 drive is designed for server storage applications in Directed Attached Storage (DAS), Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) environments and offers a solid combination of high capacity, leading 6Gb/s performance, superior data integrity, and best-in-class low power consumption. The Constellation.2 drive is offered in capacity choices of 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB, and with 6Gb/s SATA or 6Gb/s SAS interface options. Its advanced second-generation design provides improved data integrity with the new T10 Protection Information standard and an increase in reliability (1.4 million hours MTBF). With a Self Encrypting Drive (SED) option, data security is covered throughout the entire drive lifecycle.
Says John Rydning, Research Director for IDC. “Reaching the 1TB capacity in a small form factor design gives IT managers more options to meet capacity requirements with efficient storage platforms. IDC expects the use of capacity-optimized drives like Seagate’s 1TB Constellation.2 to increase by more than 50% from 2010 to 2014.”
Dell may be the first to deploy the drives in its Dell PowerVault storage enclosures and PowerEdge servers in late December.
