All within one week, major milestones on India’s roadmap to 3G broadband and beyond, have been achieved by the nation’s leading telecom technology and service providers.
While a Spectranet-Aircel-Inventum partnership has created India’s first ‘High Speed Internet Access’ on Wi-Fi, a Cisco-Reliance Communications combine has announced the country’s largest 3G deployment across 100,000 sq kms.
Integrated communications service provider Spectranet has partnered with mobile telephony provider Aircel to help the latter offer its subcribers Internet access on all Wi-Fi enabled devices including mobile phones, laptops and tablets. Aircel subscribers can access the Wi-Fi services following a simple two-step registration process. The system allows mobile smartphone users to be automatically logged in & out of Wi-Fi hotspots without having to enter username and password each time. Spectranet will deploy and manage core & access service infrastructure for Wi-Fi services enabling seamless authentication solution for both post-paid and pre-paid subscribers. This service will enable seamless Internet access for Aircel subscribers across Aircel GSM/3G network and Spectranet Wi-Fi network.
The technology platform has been supplied by leading Indian Operating System Support /Business System Support ( OSS/BSS) vendor Inventum Technologies.
This is the first ever deployment of 2G & 3G mobile data offload to WiFi within India. Spectranet has deployed Wi-Fi network at over 1000 hot-spots across six metros Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad.
Jumbo 3G rollout
Only 3 days later, Cisco today announced the completion of a new mobile network for Reliance Communications that will cover 100,000 square kilometres — the largest 3G deployment in India. Reliance customers will now be able to access mobile services such as high-quality video telephony and high-speed mobile data, along with enhanced music downloads, instant messaging and online gaming. .
The architecture includes the Cisco ASR 5000 mobile multimedia core platform; the Cisco 7600 Internet Routers and the Cisco ME 3800X Series Carrier Ethernet Switch routers, which will enable Reliance to develop and deliver, on a large scale, highly personalized and customized mobile multimedia services with assured reliability.
